What visitors say

K. Peake

This was a superb museum to visit, telling the story of Newark being occupied by the royalists during the civil war of the 1640s. The stories of how parliamentarians made gradual advances into ultimately taking the town are told and their different outfits are kept here showing a range from fighting metal armor to thick jackets, raw weapons utilised are also shown! Information is included about the divisions between Catholics and Protestants that played into the civil war with heavy execution weapons on display, along with general public's weapons as well as navigation tools like maps and the British Isles population decline is detailed here. Newark's origins in being name after a new fortification from Danes and Northern Germans around 410AD is another focus point which is where its Anglo Saxon architecture came from, history of how transport such as the River Trent then later trains boosted industries is interesting with old tickets kept and other events like the Battle of Naseby or the Black Death have their effects mentioned too!

Fantastic museum, really interesting range of exhibits from Newark history and civil war era history. We went while there was a LEGO hunt on, which was a lot of fun, but it felt like there was plenty of permanent stuff for kids - Most of which was also perfectly accessible and enjoyable for grown-ups too! Only downside is I wish we'd known the cafe closed an hour before the museum did.

Enjoyable. It's not too big that you are overloaded. Plenty of information and exhibits spread over several floors. (Some are tiny due to the constraints of the building). Reasonable for kids with activities available. Lovely café. Parking is close. Wheelchair accessible.
