Smelters Rest

West Devon

Smelters Rest is a detached ground-floor cottage sleeping two, positioned at Weir Quay where the River Tamar runs past. Couples seeking a quiet base will find an open-plan living space with a kitchen equipped for cooking, a bedroom with a kingsize bed, and a shower room. Wifi, heating, bed linen and towels are provided. One dog is welcome.

The main draw is outdoors: a private garden with a fire pit, barbecue and seating faces the water. The setting itself is historical—Weir Quay was once a working port—and the immediate area offers walks along the riverbank where tidal rhythms and passing boats form the backdrop. The wider Tamar Valley lies nearby for further exploration. The grounds contain steps and uneven areas worth noting. Parking for one car is on site. No smoking indoors. Check-in is after 15:00 and checkout before 10:00.

I visited Steamers this evening with my youngest son(14). The restaurant is lovely and the service is fantastic. My son had the fish and chips and I enjoyed the seafood linguine. Both meals were cooked perfectly and were delicious. The fish and chips came with tartare sauce, curry sauce and mushy peas. They also tasted yummy. We had just about enough room for a chocolate brownie which we shared. It was the best brownie ever. I highly recommend you visit this restaurant. It is important to book. A lovely, family business.

Lovely place, ambience, decor really nice, service generally good. The food was the slight disappointment. We expected so much more based on reviews. Ordered the seafood platter. Every element barring the pate and smoked salmon were overcooked, not so much that would have returned but definitely a few mins over and that for a specialist seafood place is disappointing. The mussels were gritty and when mentioned was told it has been an issue with the supplier. I would have thought if that was an issue than purging them properly and for long enough in clean salty water would be the answer. Overall lovely place, good service below expectation food

Absolutely incredible evening at Steamers restaurant. The “prawn crumpet” special starter was flavourful and unique, and my tomato risotto was delicious also. My husband had the mussels Moules with fries and they were very plump and fresh - 10/10! The service we received from our waitress Aliya was impeccable - very friendly, accommodating and had good menu knowledge. Our first time at Steamers but definitely not our last!

Our party of 6 for Sunday lunch were looked after with amazing service. The food was beyond good and the roast was superb. If you go make sure you leave room for dessert the summer pudding was fantastic. Thank you we will definitely come back when we’re in the area.
