DIG: An Archaeological Adventure

My nine year old really enjoyed DIG. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Interactive. Interesting artefacts. Do book if you can, especially during school holidays! We got the pass for DIG, Barley Hall and Jorvik which was good value.

A fun concept of letting kids brush aside rubberized "dirt" uncover artifacts and recreated dig sites in York. There were two other family digging in the four sites (prehistoric, roman, victorian, viking). The supervisor would rotate around to the kids and explain the objects they uncovered. A bit boring for the adults, but our kids enjoyed it. Since the ticket covers the Jorvik viking center and the Barley hall it makes a good kids morning or afternoon if you group them.

We had a happy hour and a half visit to DIG. The talk on archeology was very informative and pitched just right at child level whilst still being interesting for adults. Naomi was excellent. I could have spent longer listening to her but it was just about the right length to keep children’s interest. The “dig” was fun for my 9 year old daughter and the after exhibits were great too. I would say from ages 5-12 are the best ages for this museum.

Although generally geared towards a younger audience, my experience was tailored for my age. I found it quite engaging and educational. Some fascinating pieces, as well as knowledge I can now use elsewhere. A great experience regardless of what age you are.
