Kirriemuir sits in one of Angus's most rural valleys, where the Cairngorms meet softly rolling farmland. Buckhood is a detached cottage on the Balnaboth Estate, a working landscape of woods, moorland and water that stretches across thousands of acres. The estate's history runs deep—it was built as a Victorian sporting property, and the cottages themselves once housed estate workers. Red squirrels move through the trees here, otters hunt the burns, and deer are a daily sight.
The cottage sleeps four across two bedrooms and one bathroom. Inside, there is a living room with a woodburner and freeview television, and a combined kitchen and dining space where you can cook. The essentials—bed linen, heating and electricity—are provided. Outside, a patio and enclosed garden give you private outdoor space, and there is on-site parking. The stairs are narrow and steep. One well-behaved pet is welcome.
Walking, mountain biking and bird-watching begin at the gate. The River Prosen runs through the estate for fishing, and Glen Shee's downhill runs are 25 miles north. Kirriemuir itself, birthplace of J.M. Barrie and home to a working market, is minutes away by car. The Angus coast and Dundee lie within half an hour's drive.

You want peace and quiet, with access to some great walking, then this is the place. A South facing cottage gets the sun all day. The bedroom can be a challenge for taller people, but the place more than makes up for the height in the bedrooms being upstairs. The kitchen has all you need and chair outside to enjoy the views with you furry friends.

NOT SUITABLE FOR WINTER RENTAL. First thing to know is that you are made to pay for the heating and the place is freezing. The heaters all need upgraded. You are given a bag of damp pine, which burns fast and with not much heat so you have to buy coal to make the place habitable. The cupboards in the kitchen are damp and the dishes smell from it. The owner is also very cheeky, saying they couldn’t rent it in winter without charging for heating, but the place needs heating to stop the mould over winter. See the photos below. It would be fine in the summer but not for a winter rental. It’s a nice place that has not been well looked after. The view is very good with nice walks nearby. Parking is available via a dirt track to the house.
