Skyber Lowen

Photo: Skyber Lowen

The Lizard Peninsula draws visitors for its dramatic coastline, National Trust stretches, and network of walking trails that wind between creeks and coves. Helston sits at the heart of this landscape, with Skyber Lowen positioned in the hamlet of Kuggar on the eastern flank. The converted stone barn stands close enough to Kennack Sands that the beach is within easy reach, yet far enough into the countryside to feel genuinely secluded.

The property sleeps six across three bedrooms—a king on the ground floor with its own shower room, a double, and a twin—plus a second bathroom with a bath and shower. Upstairs, the living space opens into the pitched roof with exposed beams, large windows and French doors that frame the garden. You'll find a wood burner, Smart TV, and a fully equipped kitchen with an electric range and dishwasher. Essentials like electricity, wi-fi, bed linen and towels are included, as are the first logs for the stove. The enclosed garden has a patio, furniture and a barbecue, with dedicated outside space and a tap for rinsing wetsuits or sandy dogs after the beach. There is parking for two cars on site. No smoking inside; one small dog is welcome.

This suits families wanting a self-catering base for exploring the coast, or anyone drawn to the quieter side of Cornwall away from the main towns. Kuggar itself is characterised by calm—a couple of campsites and small bars rather than crowds, though the wider area livens considerably during peak season. The Helford River lies to the north, and much of the surrounding coastline belongs to the National Trust, so the walking possibilities extend well beyond the immediate area.
