About The Outdoor Hotel
This wild but welcoming site near Auldgirth offers mountain bikers and outdoor enthusiasts a refreshingly simple escape in the Dumfries and Galloway countryside. Set in an open field rather than manicured pitches, The Outdoor Hotel keeps things relaxed and car-free – brightly coloured wheelbarrows ferry your gear from the car park, while complimentary firepits and logs encourage evening gatherings around the flames.
The modern facilities strike a nice balance: individual shower cubicles with compost toilets and eco-friendly products provided. You're within easy reach of three acclaimed 7stanes mountain biking centres, Robert Burns' historic home in Dumfries (20 minutes), and the extraordinary Garden of Cosmic Speculation – though you'll need to plan carefully, as this cosmology-inspired sculpture garden opens just one day annually.
A village pub and café sit nearby for provisions, while the adults-only policy ensures peaceful evenings under big Scottish skies. It's unpretentious, genuinely wild camping done well.

What visitors say
We have stayed in The Bothy several times and love it. The decor perfectly matches the location and together with the log fire creates the perfect backdrop for a weekend getaway from the humdrum . The sofas are comfy, the kitchen well equipped and the beds clean and comfortable with the electric blanket an added luxury! The views are spectacular and the hosts friendly and informative -happy to help if you need them but otherwise leave you alone to make the most of your time off together. We can also recommend the lamb and wool products available from this working farm and can't wait to try out the Bell Tents later this year .

Although it was raining the most of the weekend, it was extremely cosy and relaxing getaway - super comfy bed and furnishings. The friendly organic farm (truly free range!) chickens came to say hello. The little wood fired stove kept us cosy, and was perfect to make some veggie fajhitas - plates, glasses and pans were provided for cooking! Sadly we didn't get to use the outdoor firepit due to the weather but the view and seating were gorgeous for a dry morning breakfast looking over the Scottish landscape. Host Ruth was incredibly kind, friendly and accomodating - leaving us completely to our own devices to come and go as pleased. Would also recommend the Casa Mia restaurant in Dumfries (just a 10 minute drive away and with an excellent vegan menu!) or the wee pub just down the road for food and drinks! Would love to come back again (especially with some sun!) Peaceful, Comfy and Relaxing - couldn't recommend highly enough.

The bell tent was beautiful, relaxing and everything we were looking for in a glamping trip! The bed was super comfy and we loved lounging around on the bean bag chairs, reading, and chilling out next to the firepit. Ruth was incredibly helpful and easy to contact when needed. This was one of the most relaxing places I've stayed in a really long time, and will definitely be back next time we're passing through! We'd recommend taking a dip in the nearby Loch Ettrick or a walk/bike around Ae forest.

A wonderful place to stop and visit in an area of Scotland that is a must to stop off at and explore. Felt very welcome and away from it all but still close to all things needed too. The views are great, and you can easily forget and get away from it all in the surroundings! Cannot wait to visit again to explore the areas we didn't get round to seeing
