The Stables

Couples and small families will find The Stables a relaxed base in rural East Devon, within reach of Exeter and the Jurassic Coast. The conversion sits next to a 17th-century farmhouse, with its own grounds that include a lawned garden, courtyard and a tennis court equipped with rackets and balls. Two cars can park on site, and the property is on one level throughout.

Inside are two bedrooms—a double with an ensuite shower, and a twin—plus a family bathroom with bath and shower. The open-plan living space combines kitchen, dining and lounge areas, with doors opening onto the courtyard and sitting areas. You can cook properly here, and there are books, games and DVDs for quieter evenings. Essentials like heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and wifi are covered. No smoking is permitted indoors.

The grounds offer several places to sit: the courtyard with garden furniture, a separate garden room with far-reaching rural views, and a summerhouse where tennis and badminton equipment is stored. A covered well sits in the courtyard, and there are two steps in the grounds to be aware of.
