Hollyhill Cabin

Photo: Dave Watson

Holly Hill Woodland Park sits on the edge of Southampton, a place where mature trees, open glades and water views create a genuinely quiet setting. The park itself rewards exploring—walking trails wind through the grounds, some accessible, leading down to the Hamble foreshore where you can watch the water and wildlife. A pub lies within a mile, and parking here is free.

Hollyhill Cabin is a shepherd's hut designed for two, with a double bedroom, en-suite shower room and a small kitchen where you can cook straightforward meals. The interior mixes compact living with considered detail: there's a dining area, an electric fire for winter stays, and bed linen and towels provided. Outside, a private wooden deck gives you a place to sit with a cup of tea or a drink, looking out over the grounds. The park has benches and picnic areas if you want to venture further, and a shared jetty puts you close to the water.

This is somewhere to retreat rather than explore a busy town—though the Hamble itself, with its shops and cafés, is near enough if you decide you want a change of scene. No smoking is permitted inside the cabin. One pet is welcome.

I recently visited Holly Hill Woodland Park, and it was a wonderful escape into nature. This beautiful woodland park offers peaceful walking trails, picturesque ponds, charming bridges, and lush greenery, making it the perfect place to relax and unwind. The tranquil atmosphere, fresh woodland air, and beautiful scenery made every step enjoyable. Along the trails, I spotted a variety of birds and wildlife, adding to the park’s natural charm. Whether you’re looking for a quiet walk, a family outing, or a scenic spot for photography, Holly Hill Woodland Park is a fantastic destination for all ages.

Really scenic and peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the South Hampshire Conurbation. The woodland is rich in biodiversity, with plenty of ducks to feed, butterflies, rats, moorhens and terrapins (unfortunately all terrapins in the UK are an invasive species, so I hope Fareham Borough Council has plans to remove them from the area). There was an interesting variety of trees, with a stunning sequoia planted near the grotto. The easy access trail isn’t completely accessible, someone without an off road wheelchair might struggle, but I saw people using mobility scooters with no issue, and the paths were quite wide. There are a few inclines but they aren’t steep for long. Parking is free, and free toilets are accessible close to the car park, though take your welly boots as they were flooded with suspicious looking yellow “water” on my visit.

I cannot sing the praises of this hidden paradise enough! Free parking (as long as you are within the bay markings and less than 24hrs). Dog friendly and plenty of bins for their poos. A wonderful site with man made gardens and water features that turn into rich woodland and open heathland and lead down to the river Hamble. Honestly the diversity of the site has blown me away today. I will 100% be back during peak summer to see what I can find and again during peak autumn. Today I found a slow worm and lizard together, a ghost oak tree sapling (which doesnt photosynthesise and survives by parasitising on other trees via fungi!), some sanicle (which I had never seen before), lots of birds including a green woodpecker, heron, Reed warbler, chiffchaff and goldcrest. I also found some dryads saddle. The Rhododendrons were in full bloom too and it was stunning.

I love this park, there are many paths to choose from which includes a good walk to get to the end. The lake is lovely, lots of secret paths through the woods, sunken garden, viewpoint path is stunning. Our favourite is the path to the low tide loop on the Hamble estuary. Look out for the secret blue path that you will find on the low tide loop.
