Camping in Hay-on-Wye

Hay-on-Wye sits in gently undulating border country, with the River Wye running through the valley floor and the ground rising steadily towards the Black Mountains a few miles south. Campsites in the immediate area tend to be small, family-run affairs on riverside meadows or farmland, offering a straightforward, uncomplicated camping experience rather than extensive leisure facilities, with a handful of slightly larger sites a short drive out towards the national park boundary. The terrain close to town is flat and easy, useful for pitching and for wheeling in kit, while sites further towards Clyro or the Gospel Pass sit on more sloping ground with wooded shelter and hill views.

Weather in this part of the Marches is changeable and can be markedly wetter than lowland England, given the proximity of the Black Mountains, so a good waterproof groundsheet and pitch drainage are worth checking whatever the season. Wild camping has no general legal right in England or Wales outside a few specific areas of Dartmoor, so camping around Hay means using one of the established sites or securing a landowner's permission in advance; the open hillside of the Black Mountains looks inviting but is not open to camping without agreement from those who farm it.

May through September is the reliable camping season here, with the ground driest and the days long enough for evenings by the river or an after-dinner walk. Late May coincides with the Hay Festival, which fills the town and pushes demand for nearby camping and caravan pitches sharply upward, so early booking matters if a festival visit is the plan. Outside those months, several of the area's sites close altogether or reduce to a skeleton service, reopening again in spring once the ground has firmed up and the worst of the winter rain has passed.
