Allt na Criche

Photo: Iris Admiraal - van den Berg

A single-storey cottage designed with accessibility in mind, Allt na Criche sits on level ground throughout, with ramp access at the rear and a wet room featuring a walk-in shower. The layout includes two bedrooms—one with a double bed, the other convertible from a zip-and-link double into two singles—plus a separate dining room and sitting room with Freeview TV. The kitchen is fully equipped to cook from scratch, with a dishwasher and washing machine alongside the usual appliances. Heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and wifi are all included.

The cottage overlooks farmland with valley and hill views that shift with the seasons, from accessible walking country in summer to snow-covered landscapes in winter. On-site parking accommodates two cars. The property suits couples and families seeking a quiet base, though it is a non-smoking space. Fort Augustus itself sits on the Caledonian Canal, and the wider area offers substantial outdoor opportunity—Laggan Wolftrax for mountain biking, and enough walking from the back door to keep most visitors occupied.

A short, and beautiful, walk through the highland forests. The trail is well maintained and well signposted. It is suitable for families and is about 1.75 miles in length. Car park is not massive but we did get parked with no issue. Lovely scenery and excellent views over Loch Ness once you get to the top.

Quite a hard walk up, but I am 79 and managed it with a few rests. Lovely waterfalls and great views at the top. Parking at bottom free but limited

I'm not a hiker, but this short hike up to a scenic view was totally worth it. Beautiful and serene. And an easy convenient drive if you're exploring the areas around Loch Ness.

What a magical place ! We did the hour walk from the car park. The path is easy to follow and has white line on the way markers . The route is circular and is slightly up hill for the beginning, nothing overly challenging . The amount of trees, ferns, moss flowers, mushrooms etc is beautiful. Nature always blows me away 😊. Apologies to my poor husband for stopping frequently so I can take mushroom photos 🍄‍🟫. Can't help myself .
