Aviemore sits at the heart of the Cairngorms, where the River Spey winds through glens and forests that draw hill-walkers, skiers and outdoor enthusiasts year-round. Spey Valley Resort occupies 25 acres of this landscape, combining a quiet woodland setting with enough facilities that you need not leave the grounds if you don't want to. Chalet 19 is a two-bedroom, one-bathroom property sleeping four, positioned to overlook the golf course and furnished throughout to a comfortable standard.
The entire chalet sits on a single floor. You get a living room with Freeview TV, a kitchen with electric cooking and a full range of appliances, and two bedrooms—one double and one with twin singles. The bathroom has a bath with shower attachment. Essentials including bed linen, towels, wi-fi and electricity are provided. There is private parking for two cars, a sitting-out area with garden furniture, and access to coin-operated laundry facilities shared with other properties on the resort.
The resort's leisure facilities are the real draw: an 18-metre heated indoor swimming pool open from 8am to 9pm, a sauna, a gym, a 9-hole course on-site, and a sports hall with indoor tennis, squash and other activities. A championship 18-hole golf course is a short walk away. An additional 18-hole course lies within Aviemore itself, and the Scottish Steakhouse is nearby for meals out. The setting suits families and couples wanting straightforward self-catering with ready-made activities, though children should be supervised around an unfenced pond in the grounds. One well-behaved pet is welcome. No smoking indoors.

The photos from the website are not from this resort. That's patently dishonest. The houses are dated, but can be advertised as "quaint". Cabin/Building 5 was presented as a 3-bed. The 3rd bedroom, the one with the bunks, is the size of a cloakroom - wee. 4 adult ladies staying, yet only 2 tissue paper rolls were provided. No extras in the supply cupboard. One wee 10ml tube of body wash and shampoo provided. When we drove to the reception on the second morning, we were told that we needed to ask for tissue paper, and that they'd be brought later on. 4 of the cheapest brand were sent over in the evening. The worst of all was the no WiFi. They'd had problems with their WiFi before we checked in; it would have been good to let us know so we could perhaps go elsewhere. The WiFi was never restored until we left. When asked if we'd be compensated for that (because all online meetings had to be done via hotspot), we were told to contact corporate. 🙄 The walk paths along the River Spey were overgrown and unkempt. Positives: *The kitchen had all necessary appliances, but no tea or coffee. *The balcony upstairs was airy. *The patio downstairs had a spit for barbecue. *The living room was comfy. *The golf courses are beautifully maintained. *The leisure centre is excellent, although the machine for wringing bathing suits ripped a hole in mine. Overall, if you'd like to stay here, Caveat Emptor! Be aware of what you're getting yourself into.

We stayed at Macdonald Aviemore Resort on 26 June 2026 and were extremely disappointed. Our initial room in the Highlander Hotel was in an unacceptable condition—dirty, poorly maintained, with peeling wallpaper, damaged carpets, and hair in the bedding. We were moved to a suite in the Morlich Hotel thanks to a helpful receptionist, Brittany. While her service was excellent, the new room still had issues including stained carpets, a damaged sofa, and a dangerously loose plug socket that sparked when used. Several expected amenities were missing or poorly handled, including absent prosecco (replaced with drinks we were still charged for) and a non-functioning QR code for reception contact. Our dining experience at Giovanni’s was also poor: a glass shattered at the table, food quality was mediocre, and we were overcharged despite a meal allowance. Breakfast was unhygienic, understocked, and poorly managed, with staff unwilling to address basic requests. The room temperature exceeded 28°C overnight with no fans provided during a heatwave, making for an uncomfortable stay. For over £200 for one night, the overall experience was far below expectations, with serious issues in cleanliness, maintenance, safety, and service. While staff were polite, the resort requires urgent improvement

Absolutely unacceptable experience. I requested a couple of extra pillows due to a medical issue that requires me to sleep elevated because of severe acid reflux. I was told they would be brought to my room before 7:00 PM. No one showed up. When I called the front desk after 7:00 PM, the story changed. I was then told they “probably” did not have any extra pillows available on the property. The associate said he would need to check with housekeeping in the morning, but also said he was sure they probably did not have any. This is a large hotel, so the idea that there are no extra pillows available is hard to believe. If true, that is also concerning, because it raises questions about how they handle worn, stained, or unusable pillows. The lack of follow-through was bad enough, but the condition of the room made it worse. The carpets were dirty, the furniture was worn down, and one of the chairs had a stain that appeared to be bodily fluid. The room did not feel clean or properly maintained. The most frustrating part was the complete lack of concern from the front desk. This was not a luxury request. It was a simple accommodation related to a medical issue, and the staff failed to follow through or offer any reasonable solution. Unfortunately, I am booked here for two nights. Based on the poor service, poor communication, and unacceptable room condition, I would strongly recommend avoiding this hotel. The customer service is terrible, and the rooms are not being maintained to an acceptable standard.

I was lucky enough to stay in a self catering lodge at the above resort. The location was quiet with the Spey river forming one side of the resort. The lodge was clean and well appointed with, on the top floor, a lounge with a wood fire. On the middle floor, the main entrance, because of the sloping landscape, was the dining and kitchen area. The bottom floor had the bedroom with french windows leading to a small patio. On this floor was the bathroom, toilet and even a sauna. The staff were helpful. I left my tripod behind and they contacted me to let me know and arranged it's return. Overall a relaxing holiday. There was also a gym and nine hole golf course on site which I did not use.
