8 handpicked places to stay

Bute's places to stay reflect the island's Victorian holiday history as much as its scenery does: several of Rothesay's guest houses occupy grand seafront townhouses built for exactly this purpose more than a century ago, and many still look out over the same curve of bay towards Cowal. Choice is concentrated in and around Rothesay itself, where the ferry, the shops and most of the restaurants are within walking distance, but a handful of characterful options further south and around Port Bannatyne suit those after a quieter base.

At the upper end, expect boutique guest houses with individually styled rooms, sea views and a genuine sense of personality — Bute's award-winning small hotels have built strong reputations well beyond the size of the island. The mid-range covers traditional coaching inns with their own bars and restaurants, and self-catering suites aimed at longer stays or groups wanting independence. Further down, Rothesay has a good run of straightforward, well-run guest houses and B&Bs, many family-owned for years, offering en-suite rooms, cooked breakfasts and a warm welcome at prices well below what similar sea views would cost on the mainland.

Almost everywhere on the island books up for the peak summer weeks and around the island's Highland Games, so it's worth reserving ahead for a July or August stay. Outside those months, availability is easier and rates drop noticeably, making spring and autumn good times to find a room with a view without the premium.
