Keighley

Things to do in Keighley, West Yorkshire

Keighley grew up in the narrow valley where the River Worth cuts down off the Pennine moors to meet the Aire, and that geography still shapes the place. The town sits low, hemmed in by hillsides, with the moorland rising sharply to the south and west towards Haworth. It's a working West Yorkshire town rather than a chocolate-box one, but the landscape around it is the real draw: heather moor, stone-walled fields and steep valley sides that have barely changed since the Brontë sisters walked them.

The valley's industrial past and its wild edges come together neatly at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, a heritage steam line that runs up through the valley towards Haworth and Oxenhope, giving a proper sense of how the hills close in around the line. Cliffe Castle Park and Museum sits on the edge of town with its grounds and displays, and for families there's Role-play Roundabout, Cobbles and Clay Cafe, Dragons Den Keighley and High Adventure, alongside The Leisure Centre Keighley for something more active.

Keighley works well as a base for exploring the wider Worth Valley and the moors above it, whether you're heading up to Haworth for the Brontë connections, taking the steam railway for its own sake, or simply walking out from town onto the open hillside. It's an area where the landscape does a lot of the talking, and the town itself makes a practical, well-placed starting point for it.

About staying in Keighley

Much of the appeal lies just outside the town centre, up in the villages that climb towards the moor. Haworth, with its cobbled main street, is where the Brontë Parsonage Museum sits, and it's also where several of the area's characterful places to stay are found, including Haworth Old Hall and the Old Silent Inn, both old stone buildings that feel very much part of the landscape rather than dropped into it. Closer to Keighley itself there's the Dalesgate Hotel and the Busfeild Arms, while the Premier Inn at Bingley and The Kings Head Hotel offer something more straightforward for those who just need a base. Two campsites, Woodsworth Exploring and Wuthering Heights Inn, put you right out among the moorland scenery if you'd rather sleep closer to it.
