It's not quite 'blink and you'll miss it' at Peacock Farm Camping, but this family-friendly spot opens to the public for just 60 precious days a year, so timing matters. The pop-up site occupies a working farm on the south-eastern fringes of Lake District National Park, almost halfway between Kendal and Windermere – views sweep across distant wooded hills and fields framed by moss-covered stone walls.

Amenities stay refreshingly simple: portable toilets, a washing-up area, but no drinkable water on site. You're welcome to light campfires or barbecues, and the farm sells its own hand-made sausages and burgers if you order ahead. The nearest shop sits just across the A591, or Kendal and Staveley are 10 minutes by car. A pub serving steak and curry lies five minutes down the lane.

Dogs are welcome year-round, though keep them leashed around the resident alpacas, fell ponies and sheep. Wildlife abounds – red squirrels, nesting ospreys at nearby Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve, dragonflies darting over peaty ponds – making this a genuine walkers' and wildlife-watchers' haven.
