About Altnaharra Hotel

Altnaharra sits in some of the remotest country in the Highlands, a scattered settlement near Lairg surrounded by moorland, lochs and walking terrain, with Castle Varrich a nearby point of interest for those exploring further afield. It's the kind of location that suits guests wanting quiet and space rather than nightlife, and the Altnaharra Hotel has long served as the base for people drawn to that landscape.

The hotel has 19 rooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, and some show their age rather than presenting a fully modern finish. What guests consistently rate highly is the food, with breakfasts and dinners served in the restaurant, plus a bar for drinks in the evening. Rooms come with drinks facilities, and practical extras such as free WiFi, luggage storage and a laundry service are on hand, alongside a garden for stepping outside.

Staff are noted for being friendly and attentive, which matters in a spot this isolated. Fishing is available nearby, and the surrounding area offers plenty of walking, making the hotel a natural stopping point for those exploring the wider Highlands. Free on-site parking is provided for guests arriving by car.

Super friendly and supportive staff. Nice food & coffee. A perfect place to stop on the NC500 route. Close to Ben Hope, Lairg, Ullapool and many places in the northwest coast of Scotland Highland. Good WiFi, car park, kitchen service and reception. A variety of options on the menu. Overall, this is a very beautiful, authentic and traditional Scottish lodging & dining place. A true place for unique Scottish experiences!

I visited this hotel for 3 nights with my 13 year old son for a few days fishing. It has a feel of an old fashioned Fishing and Shooting Lodge. It is located in the most picturesque part of Scotland. The twin room was very comfortable, spacious, and very clean, with TV. The hotel has access to various Lochs in the vicinity for fishing. The manager Henry, was very friendly welcoming and attentive. Food was hearty, and well presented. I highly recommend a visit. Its also well located for visits to Bettyhill (recommend) Tongue (recommend). It would be great to see more North Coast 500 folks use it.

On our tour of the Highlands staying in 10 BnBs or hotels The Altnaharra room (The Teal and blue) was by far the worst. It needs gutting It was also the second most expensive. To be fair the food in the evening was good and the staff on duty were great, trying to be helpful against all odds. Breakfast was not included which is odd for the price. I would recommend avoiding this one.

The Altnaharra hotel is spotless, comfortable and set in amazing scenery. The food is top notch. But what really makes this place so special are the amazing staff and the hospitality shown to guests. Wonderful, friendly service. I can't recommend highly enough.
