About Glen Orchy House
Lerwick, Shetland's main town, is a working harbour settlement that makes a sensible base for exploring the islands, and Glen Orchy House sits within it on Knab Road as a straightforward, traditional guesthouse rather than a polished hotel. With 23 rooms, it's a sizeable operation for a B&B, offering en-suite bathrooms, free WiFi, drinks in the room and 24-hour reception, though the rooms themselves are kept simple rather than styled.
Food is a genuine point of interest here: alongside breakfast, the on-site restaurant and bar serve a combination of European and Thai dishes, an unusual pairing for a guesthouse of this kind. There's also free on-site parking, luggage storage, meeting rooms and airport transfers, which makes it practical for both holidaymakers and those passing through for work.
The surrounding area offers fishing, watersports, and nearby pubs, bars and restaurants for those wanting to venture beyond the property itself. It suits guests who want a no-frills, well-located place to sleep and eat well, rather than a boutique stay.

The location was good but that's where the positives end. The rooms are small and very very hot, furnishings tired and dated, bed linens and towels old and threadbare. The breakfast fruits, yoghurts, croissants etc were the cheapest they could buy, the Thai food that was cooked in the restaurant during the evening could be smelt throughout the hotel all the time. There was no smoking in the hotel but an area just outside a back door was set up for smokers, but this hadn't been cleaned for ages, overflowing cigarette butts and an empty beer bottle. To get to my room I was told to use this door which wasn't very nice. Would not recommend at all

Well located as an easy walk into town and along the coastal path. Wonderful to walk up to the Knab each evening after dinner and gaze out over the sea. Chilly but excellent. The rooms are pretty basic and a bit tired but what really lets the place down are the very old towels and pillow cases and doonas. Everything was near threadbare The ever present guy at Breakfast was always so helpful and obliging. The dining room also doubles as a Thai Restaurant in the evening and the meal was fine.

Tired hotel with not much going for it. Small rooms very basic decor, bathroom totally out of date, shower mixers off the tap that can’t get the right temp, paper thin walls, dreadful reception where to stop! They didn’t make up our room on the first night, and the room was far too hot but can only open window a tiny bit. Way too pricey but then Shetland seems to get away with it! Just book elsewhere…..

A very disappointing experience saved by lovely service at breakfast. Bed linen on one bed didn’t fit, so very uncomfortable to sleep on. The linen itself was threadbare and faded, the pillows floppy and ancient, one bed was adjustable but the thick layer of dust underneath revolting! The shower was poor, water pressure low and occasionally was cold, the shower head needed replacing, the handle of it was broken. The temperature control for my room was set high above a chest of drawers so I could neither read it nor adjust it. I could hear everything the person in the room above me did - shower, toilet, walking around! It’s situated on top of the highest hill in Lerwick. Breakfast was nicely cooked, and served by a delightful smiling gentleman, who was the highlight point!
