About Alder Lodge Guest House
Alder Lodge occupies a stone building on Clairmont Place in Lerwick's Old Town that was originally constructed between 1830 and 1840 as Shetland's first bank, and the property has traded as a guest house since 1984, run throughout by the same family. The combination of a historic shell and long, consistent ownership gives it a settled, well-practised feel rather than the turnover common to short-let guest houses.
Rooms are comfortable and modernised behind the period stonework, and the central Old Town position means the harbour, the Shetland Museum, Commercial Street's shops and the main bus route to the airport are all within easy reach on foot. The house's own history connects it to the town's Viking heritage sites and its calendar of festivals, including Up Helly Aa and the Shetland Folk Festival, both a short walk away when they are running.
As a smaller, family-run property, Alder Lodge suits visitors who want a personal welcome and local knowledge over the scale of a hotel, and its price point makes it one of the better-value central bases in Lerwick for a Shetland trip built around walking into town each day.
What guests say
My room was spacious bed was comfortable, an almost brand new bathroom lacking toilet roll holder and somewhere in the shower to put shower gel etc. Great water pressure. Heating was excellent but great to have a window for fresh air. A longer cord on the blind would be good - I had to kneel on the window sill to reach it. Was uncomfortable that although I had put out my DO NOT DISTURB sign my room was entered at least twice while I was out. My view was scaffolding, not the best look at the beginning of the season.

Very central in Lerwick but in a quiet area which makes it perfect as a base if you're planning to walk around town and the Knab for a few days. We had excellent service there as we asked to leave our luggage before check in and they were super accommodating and even let us get into our room a little early(this was only possible because nobody has stayed the prior night though). Breakfast was perfectly cooked and the non-cooked options were varied. Highly recommend a stay as it's very good value for money and very clean and well kept overall.
