About Queens Hotel
The Queens Hotel occupies a solid spot on Commercial Street in the heart of Lerwick, the kind of long-established building that anchors a harbour town. It holds 28 en-suite rooms, many looking straight out over the water, giving guests a proper sense of Shetland's coastal setting without leaving the town centre.
Rooms come with drinks available and the usual comforts of an en-suite stay, and reception is staffed around the clock. That said, some parts of the building show their age, and service at times can be patchy rather than consistently attentive, so it suits guests who want location over polish. There's no parking on site, though free parking can be found nearby.
The central position is the real draw: cafes, restaurants and a pub or two are all within easy reach on foot, and the surrounding area offers golf, fishing, watersports and other entertainment for those keen to explore further. It's a straightforward, well-placed base for seeing Lerwick and the islands beyond.
What guests say
The choice of hotels in Lerwick is limited and speaking with locals they said that other establishments should be avoided and that the Queens was ok. We knew before we booked (3 chaps on a motorbike trip), that no restaurant/ meals. But there are enough good cafes and restaurants (we would advise booking in advance) within 5 minutes of the hotel. The room was fine, clean and tidy. Tea, coffee and toiletries supplied. Yes it's dated, needs redecorating but the staff were friendly and it served its purpose for us. We did read reviews the day before we arrived, which did concern us, but our experience was that it was fine and the "bad" reviews did not match what we found.

I stayed here on a work trip. It was the only hotel with rooms left when my organisation booked. I don't leave many reviews and I don't like to leave negative ones. Firstly, the plus points. It's a superb location on the main street and a lovely old historic building. Views are superb. The hotel is clean. Staff are very friendly but... The hotel is understaffed. No one was at reception when we arrived and we had to phone a number on a handwritten note and leave our bags in an unlocked room while the hotel was just open for anyone to walk in and when Lerwick has a spate of house break ins and vandalism reported. The young woman who eventually served us was fantastic but was also cleaning all the rooms and then was told our rooms had nor been allocated- this was past check in time. On the second day when I returned to my room the door had been left open! I had locked it but whoever replaced the towels (they didn't replace them just left clean ones) was maybe in such rush they didn't close the door. The hotel doesn't feel secure. The public areas rooms are extremely dated and in state of disrepair. Bed clothes and towels are yellowed and some thread bare. The window in my room was stuck slightly open and as it overlooked the sea the draft was fierce at night. The light in the bathroom failed on the last night and blinked on and off like a strobe. Rooms were not cleaned or dirty cups replaced throughout my 3 night stay. There is no bar or restaurant. No drinking water in the rooms. Although there are plenty of places to eat nearby, very little opens before 12 noon on a Sunday. Lastly, those islanders I was working with expressed a mixture of amusement and horror when I told them where I was staying, so the local rep is poor. The impression I have is of overstretched staff (however lovely) and an owner who really seems disinterested in customer safety never mind experience but is very happy to take good money from us. It's the owner I have an issue with. I'd avoid this hotel. It's a waste of good staff and a good location but the owner seems to not give a toss. When you look at reviews it's clearly been like this for years and the owners are not addressing any of the problems. Really doesn't make sense given all its potential, the only explanation is the owners don't care.

It’s a shame. The hotel building has potential. But the bar and restaurant will probably be ‘under renovation’ for many years to come. Because of the odd opening hours of the nearby cafés, it’s difficult to find anything to eat for breakfast. And when a restaurant does happen to be open, you can’t get a table without a booking.

A quality sleep, clean room and bathroom. Beach next door offers a super swim opportunity! No bar. No restaurant. Readily looked after our bags for a day :)

People say this hotel offers clean rooms and bathrooms, stunning sea views, and a superb central location with easy access to nearby cafes and restaurants.
Other reviews mention the building can be poorly maintained and the staff can be absent.
