Shell Island Camp Site

2nd time staying here, the views and beach are incredible. Amazing sunset and sunrise. Facilities are good, clean hot showers, we used the laundrette this time, £5 for 34min wash, £1 for 15mins drying. Lovely pitches as you can go anywhere. 20min drive ito Barmouth, Lovely town. We will be back.

We had a really good 2-night camping stay at Shell Island. The kids really enjoyed playing on the sand dunes and loved collecting plenty of shells from the beach. The campsite had a great atmosphere with beautiful coastal views. Toilet and water facilities were superb, very neat and clean throughout our stay. A perfect spot for a relaxing family camping trip.

This was my first visit to Shell Island, and my partner hadn't been back in around 20 years, so we were both excited to see what it was like. The site itself is enormous! We spent about 15 minutes driving around to find the perfect pitch. We arrived fairly early on a Friday, knowing the campsite was sold out for that day and the following one, but there still seemed to be plenty of space. We found a lovely spot with beautiful views of the hills, and we were only about a minute's walk from the beach. After setting up the tent, the heat quickly got to us, so we headed to the café for some food and cold drinks. I'd heard people say the prices were expensive, but I honestly found them very reasonable compared to many other places. The portions were huge, the food was good, and the cool air inside the building was a much welcomed bonus! One of the things that impressed me most was how clean everything was. Even the toilet blocks away from the main buildings were kept really clean throughout our stay. We both really enjoyed spending time in the bar and would highly recommend the strawberry and lime Welsh cider. Once again, the prices were very reasonable, much cheaper than our local pub back home. On our second night, our camping stove decided to stop working, so we gave the pizza place a try. The pizza toppings were excellent and full of flavour, although the base wasn't quite to my taste. I would definitely recommend the chips with cheese sauce though, they were delicious! We made a point of trying to explore as much of the site as possible. The shop was excellent, with a good range of products and genuinely friendly staff. I especially liked the refrigerated section stocked with BBQ food, which would be really handy if you'd forgotten anything. The arcade was great fun too. I'm not sure the 2p machines were designed for two people in their mid-40s, but we had an absolute blast! The only downside was a few children kicking and banging the machines to try to knock more 2ps out, which was a little frustrating. One thing we were quite nervous about before arriving was the noise. We knew England were playing on the Saturday evening and expected it to be quite lively, especially with the match being shown on the big screen in the bar. However, we couldn't have been more surprised. Everyone was incredibly respectful. Those watching at their pitches kept the volume low, and despite being within walking distance of the bar, we couldn't hear the match at all. The only time we heard any noise was when England scored! The setting is absolutely stunning. Between the beach, the mountain views, and the relaxed atmosphere, it's easy to see why people return so often. We also loved how dog-friendly the site is and seeing so many happy dogs enjoying their holidays. We will definitely be bringing ours next time. The only area I think could be improved is the shower facilities. The showers themselves were clean, but for a campsite of this size they did feel a little limited, especially as they're only located in the main buildings. Depending on where you're pitched, it can be quite a walk. If I had a couple of tips for future visitors, they would be to think carefully about where you pitch. We happened to end up almost exactly halfway between two toilet blocks, which made for quite a walk, especially during the night! We'd also recommend making the most of the space available. Shell Island has a 15-metre spacing rule between pitches, and because the site is so large it's generally quite easy to follow. Giving yourself and others that extra bit of space makes for a much more relaxing camping experience.

Shell Island is a wonderful place to camp! It's BEAUTIFUL, surrounded by sea and mountains. The staff are fab, SO welcoming, helpful, fun and professional, couldn't do enough for us when we asked. Pitches are brilliant, so many options to choose as the site is vast, and you are free to camp where you like - as long as you are 15 meters away from anyone else. It's not hard to find one with a great view and feels safe with a chilled and friendly vibe. The facilities are good, toilets and showers are regularly cleaned, you often see staff around site hard at work keeping the place nice. The restaurant and bar have delicious food and drinks, and the shops had everything we needed and more, from groceries to camping equipment and ice-cream (we spent a fortune on ice, merch and gifts!) Many happy memories of Shell Island, and our most recent stay was to say farewell to my brother and lay him to rest there, as he loved it. We had the best time and Shell Island will ALWAYS have a special place in our hearts. Thank you to everyone who makes it happen. Corrina and the Rogers Clan : ) x
