About Shoulder of Mutton
Shoulder of Mutton is a pub-hotel in Calverton where the kitchen does most of the talking, with a changing winter menu and supper club dishes that regulars come back for. The food is well presented and thoughtfully put together, served in a cosy bar and restaurant with a garden and outdoor seating for warmer evenings, though service can slow down when things get busy.
Above the pub sit six en-suite rooms, straightforward and comfortable rather than grand, with free WiFi and drinks available in room. There's free on-site parking, 24 hour reception, and kids' meals on the menu, plus pets are welcome, making it an easy stopover as much as a destination in its own right.
Calverton sits within reach of Bletchley Park and Willen Lake for a day out, and there's a golf course, entertainment, and further pubs and restaurants nearby for those staying longer. It's a small, characterful base with a restaurant that punches well above its size.

Disappointed with our last two visits. On our first visit, the chef hadn't turned up, so there was no food service. We accepted that as an unfortunate last-minute issue, but then my Aperol Spritz arrived without any Prosecco, so we left feeling it had just been an off day. We decided to give it another chance, but unfortunately it was another disappointing experience. We arrived at 6pm after the venue had opened at 5pm, but we still couldn't order food because the chef hadn't arrived. He did eventually turn up, but the meal wasn't worth the wait. The offer of £20 for a pasta dish and a Pinot, which seemed like a deal until I realised the items would have cost £18.70 if bought separately. The pasta was extremely overcooked—more like soup than pasta. It definitely wasn't al dente and was falling apart on the fork. There wasn't even any salt and pepper on the table. The staff are lovely and friendly, which is a real positive, and the garden area is fantastic for families. However, the overall experience doesn't feel anywhere near as well run as it was when the venue first re-opened.

We had a roast butternut squash dinner and a mixed grill, hardly any butternut squash mainly onion, cauliflower cheese was off somehow, the roast potatos where all raw, all the mixed grill meat was dry and over done except the lambe as there was none, it was all fat and no meat, the sausages and chips where nice and the coleslaw, the chips look fancy and plenty when they arrive, only to discover they pack the bottom out with a lode of paper, took nearly an hr to arrive when there was only six people here, £60-70 for a meal we didn't particularly enjoy, we will definitely not come back here for food unfortunately, the place looks lovely and has a good feel about it is a shame, we did complain and no one came back out for 30 minutes and we had to prompt the manager, we had an apology but also it was our fault for not going in saying something sooner, they checked every table but ours tho so 😉 Definitely not a fan

We have been to the shoulder of mutton quite a lot recently, most recently for the supper club which was amazing! Each dish was absolutely delicious and perfect service as well. Would 100% recommend.

So disappointed. The brothers used to be my favourite chefs. But the food here was incredibly poor. We had a roast previously which was not great, but decided to go back again to give them another try. The worst roast dinner I've ever sampled. The presentation was shocking, slapped on the plate. The beef was so chewy I gave up trying it eat it. The flavours of the vegetables were off. Their recipes really need updating. The desserts that we ended up getting to go as service was shocking slow and poor, were horrendous. Super thick pastry on the lemon tart. Curd was definitely not homemade. Tiramisu had no flavour, and we don't even know what the third dessert was supposed to be, but we couldn't guess as it didn't taste of anything but sugar. Staff were overwhelmed and not enough of them. Where they were stressed it was like a 'so what' attitude. They are in desperate need of a shift manager to help run front of house and train the staff. Such a shame. But honestly, would never return here.
