Nantwich, a short drive south, is the obvious choice: a well-preserved Tudor town with pubs offering rooms, guesthouses and small independent hotels, all within walking distance of its half-timbered High Street, St Mary's Church and long-running market. Middlewich, just north of the hamlet, has a more modest range of accommodation but is handy for anyone exploring the Trent and Mersey and Shropshire Union canal junction on foot or by boat.

Crewe, three miles southeast, offers the widest choice of hotels in the immediate area, largely aimed at business and rail travellers thanks to its major station on the West Coast Main Line, and is a sensible base if you want fast onward transport links alongside your stay. Further afield, Chester and its wider surrounding countryside open up a much bigger range of boutique and heritage hotels for those willing to extend the drive by half an hour or so.

Whichever base you choose, the appeal of staying near Minshull Vernon is the same: quiet, flat Cheshire countryside, an easy stretch of the Shropshire Union Canal on the doorstep, and quick access to two contrasting market towns, industrial Middlewich and Tudor Nantwich, without ever being far from a motorway or railway for onward travel.

There is little in the way of formal attractions in the hamlet itself, but it sits within easy reach of some of Cheshire's best canal and market-town days out.

• Shropshire Union Canal towpath — the Middlewich Branch runs directly through the parish, past Minshull Wharf and Telford's canal bridges, and makes for a flat, easy walk or cycle in either direction.
• Middlewich — a historic salt town a few miles north, where the Trent and Mersey and Shropshire Union canals meet; the towpaths here are popular for gentle walks toward Winsford, Northwich or Sandbach.
• Lion Salt Works, Northwich — a restored open-pan salt works and museum on the Trent and Mersey Canal, with salt-making exhibits, a play area and café, telling the story of the industry that shaped this part of Cheshire.
• Nantwich — a well-preserved Tudor market town on the River Weaver, with half-timbered buildings along the High Street, the medieval St Mary's Church (known locally as "the cathedral of south Cheshire"), and a market that has traded since 1500.
• Church Minshull — a neighbouring canalside village with its own stretch of the Shropshire Union Canal, popular with walkers doing the loop out from Minshull Vernon.
• Crewe — the nearest large town, three miles southeast, with rail links across the country and its own railway heritage.

There is no pub or café in Minshull Vernon itself, so eating out means a short drive to one of the surrounding villages or market towns. Nantwich has a good spread of independent cafés, bakeries and pubs around its historic centre, and its market, trading since 1500, is a good spot for local produce, with a farmers' market on the last Saturday of the month. Middlewich and the villages along the Shropshire Union Canal, including Church Minshull, have traditional canalside pubs that serve walkers and boaters, making a pint or a meal after a towpath walk an easy option.

Minshull Vernon sits in flat, open Cheshire farmland right alongside the Shropshire Union Canal, and it is worth being clear from the outset: wild camping is not legal in England without the landowner's permission, so pitching up on farmland or canal towpaths without asking first is not an option here, however inviting the setting looks. What the area does offer is a scatter of proper campsites and caravan parks within easy reach, many of them geared toward the boaters, cyclists and walkers who use the canal network running through Middlewich, Church Minshull and on toward Nantwich.

The terrain itself is gentle and low-lying, dominated by dairy pasture, arable fields and the meandering lines of the River Weaver and its brooks, so campers can expect flat, easy pitches rather than anything dramatic, with the canal towpath offering a level route for walking or cycling straight from a tent door. Cheshire's plain can be wetter underfoot than visitors expect, particularly in the shoulder seasons, so a pitch with decent drainage and a solid path to the facilities block is worth checking before booking.

Late spring through to early autumn is the best window for camping here, when the ground is driest, the canal is busiest with narrowboats, and long evenings make it possible to walk out to a village pub and back before dark. Midsummer weekends can get busy at the more popular sites near Middlewich and Nantwich, so booking ahead is sensible. Outside those months, the flat, open landscape offers little shelter from wind and rain, so it suits well-prepared campers more than fair-weather ones.
