The spirit of wild camping, but in a sheltered spot to make life that little bit comfier… that's the idea at The Snap Inn Walkers Retreat. Out in the gorgeous Dumfries and Galloway countryside 15 minutes' drive from Newton Stewart, this small site sits just off the Southern Upland Way – no detours required for those tackling one of Scotland's great long-distance walks. Being a hardy hiker isn't a prerequisite, though. You'll still be welcome to settle into the sheltered pitches here, perhaps using it as a base for shorter jaunts into nearby Galloway Forest Park or nights spent gazing up at the stars in this designated dark sky park.

Pitches are on the simple side to make the most of the remote setting, but there's a firepit to warm hands and feet, plus barbecues are welcome for hot dinners. Facilities include a drying room (essential after a day on the trails), showers, and wifi – surprisingly civilised for somewhere that feels wonderfully off-grid.
