The Cart Linhay

North Devon

Built from a traditional cart linhay—a single-storey stone structure once used to shelter farm equipment—this converted barn sits next to the owner's home in Meshaw, a hamlet on the edge of North Devon's countryside. What you get is a compact, ground-floor space: one double bedroom with an ensuite shower, an open-plan living and dining area, and a kitchen equipped for proper cooking. Wi-Fi, heating, bed linen and towels are all included.

The garden is fully enclosed and lawned, with a patio, furniture and a wood-fired hot tub where you can soak while looking out over the surrounding fields. There's parking for two cars on site, and if you're travelling with a dog, it can roam freely outside. The property doesn't permit smoking.

From the doorstep, footpaths lead into the countryside; South Molton's market town amenities are within reach. The North Devon and Exmoor coastline is accessible for beach time or walks along the South West Coastal Path, while inland you'll find the gorge at Watersmeet, the cliff railway at Lynton, and a handful of National Trust sites. It's a two-person retreat that works well for a couple looking for a quieter base—whether for a weekend or longer.

Loved our stay here. The view was incredible, the stay was peaceful and the unit had everything we needed.

What can I say, The Cart Lindhay was a gem. Finished to a high standard, it was a brilliant place for our family to say for the week. It had everything we needed including modern fridge, washing machine, tumble dryer, space to wash off our sandy wet suits and water sports gear. We only had one day of rain which we spent at home as it was such a nice place to stay and enjoy the views. The small and enclosed garden was perfect for our toddler and the girls were even treated to a farm tour. Located 5 minutes from a main road and 7 minutes from a Tesco, it is a great balance of being rural but also being close to amenities and beaches. Hosts were very friendly and helpful.
