Old Reading Room

North Yorkshire

Old Reading Room is a thoughtfully restored early 1900s building that started life as a village reading room and now functions as a complete holiday home. The property sleeps five across three bedrooms: a kingsize with its own ensuite, a zip-and-link super kingsize (which can split into two singles), and a single room. A second bathroom with roll-top bath and shower serves the other bedrooms. Throughout, original features—beamed ceilings, exposed stonework, stone and oak floors—sit alongside modern comfort and contemporary furnishings.

The ground floor is one open-plan space that merges living, dining and kitchen areas, with a wood-burning multi-fuel stove, Freeview TV, and an electric Aga for cooking. A utility room has a washing machine; upstairs, a galleried study provides a quieter retreat. The essentials are covered: heating runs throughout (including underfloor in the bathrooms), electricity, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi are all included, plus fuel for the burner. Outside, there's an enclosed lawned garden with courtyard seating, a patio and summerhouse, plus private parking. The village sits on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, with walking and mountain biking accessible immediately, and larger attractions like York, Helmsley, Castle Howard and Fountains Abbey within reach. Shops and pubs are about a mile away. Note that the property has open, steep spiral or narrow stairs.
