The Old Telephone Exchange

Northumberland

View on Google Maps

Two couples will find The Old Telephone Exchange works well as a base in Rothbury. This former telephone exchange, built in stone, has been renovated throughout with a contemporary interior. Downstairs is an open-plan living space with a woodburner and dining area, plus a kitchen equipped for proper cooking—electric oven, induction hob, dishwasher and all the usual equipment. One double bedroom is also on the ground floor, alongside a bathroom with bath and shower. Upstairs, a galleried second double bedroom offers views into the living space below. Heating is underfloor in the bathroom and gas central heating elsewhere; electricity, bed linen, towels and wifi are included, and there is parking for one car on site.

Rothbury itself is walkable from the cottage. The Queens Head Hotel is within a mile, and there are pubs and restaurants within a few minutes' walk. What makes this location particularly appealing for cyclists is the Sandstone Way Cycle Path, which runs directly outside—it stretches from the Scottish Borders south to the Peak District—and the cottage has bike storage. For walkers, the Simonside Hills rise just beyond the town. Alnwick Castle and Cragside House are accessible as day trips. The Northumbrian Heritage Coast, with its beaches and castles, lies further east, and Hadrian's Wall and Kielder Dark Sky Park are within reach. No smoking in the property.
