About Isle Of Iona Campsite

Cars driving you nuts? Want an old-style camping trip on a pretty and peaceful island? Retreat to the tiny island of Iona in the Inner Hebrides – this is an ancient isle full of history where kings were laid to rest and monks wandered in scholarly contemplation, and which is still known today as a place of peace.

Cars are allowed for resident islanders only (if you're driving, you can leave your car at the ferry port in Fionnphort), but it's easy to get about under your own steam as the island is only three and a half miles long. From the ferry, it's a 20-minute walk to this working croft on the west of the island, where roomy grass tent pitches spread across prime ground with first-rate views. The smart washroom block opened for the 2021 season houses five toilets and five showers, plus there's a communal fridge, firepit and barbecue area – proper back-to-basics island camping without sacrificing the essentials.

A Spar is on the island for groceries and tipples, with two hotels, a pub and a tearoom serving up meals and snacks when you fancy a break from camp cooking.

We had an unforgettable stay at Iona Campsite over the Easter Bank Holiday—it truly felt like an adventure from start to finish. Travelling up from Preston, the journey itself was part of the experience, with the scenic roads and ferry crossings making it all feel really special. We arrived late in the afternoon and were warmly welcomed by Mark, the site manager. He was an absolute star throughout our stay—especially when Storm Dave rolled in! Thanks to his help and guidance, we were well prepared for the wild weather Iona can throw at you (including some impressively horizontal rain!). Despite the conditions, the facilities were excellent. The toilet block and kitchen were very clean and well maintained, and they provided a really comfortable space to retreat to during the storm. The campsite itself is set in a stunning location, and the island is beautifully picturesque. At just 3 miles by 1 mile, everything is within easy reach, which makes exploring simple and enjoyable. A big thank you again to Mark for all his help and local knowledge—it really made a difference to our stay. We’re already looking forward to returning. A fantastic Easter Bank Holiday escape!

A great little campsite, very quiet when we were there. Really scenic, as cyclists we like the campsite, as you can't drive your car on to the site, so it really had that great feel of being in nature. The small kitchen unit was really useful with kettle, toaster, microwave, fridge, sink, and hot water. Great for cyclists. The showers were clean and worked very well. Staff also very friendly. Campsites like this are really important for people on foot and on bike, so it is really worth staying there for at least one night.

Iona is a gorgeous isle, this campsite made my trip even better! Great spot to pitch your tent. The host Mark helped me locate some good options to set up despite there having been quite a bit of rain the previous day/week. Being surrounded by the rugged island landscape was lovely, and the lambs this time of year were an adorable bonus. Mark does a fantastic job keeping the toilets, showers, and kitchen clean. And what a luxury to have a hot shower, microwave, kettle, and job/stove top while camping. I could only stay one night because I was booked for a retreat at the Abbey Community, next time I'll stay a whole week at Iona Campsite!! I can't wait.

This campsite was overall very nice but there’s a few things to note and maybe some changes that the owners should take into consideration. The ground is really soft which is good for staking your tent but for that reason it can also be quite boggy. Nice kitchen area but no communal area to sit and socialize with other campers out of the rain. There’s also no drying facilities for wet clothes and no drying of clothes allowed in the bathrooms. If you’re backpacking out of a small tent that means keeping all of your soaking wet socks in the tent with you… not pleasant. Lots of space to pitch so there’s privacy if that’s what you’re after and it’s more ‘natural’ looking than just a flat expanse of grass like a lot of other campsites in Scotland. There’s also radiators in the bathrooms and kitchen but they were never turned on during our visit, during a storm we would’ve appreciated some warmth. Overall we enjoyed our visit but we feel like some small changes need to be implemented for the enjoyment and comfort of the campers.
