Rockworks Chalets - Rockworks Chalets No. 2
Orkney Islands
View on Google MapsPhoto: Barry Pickard
This semi-detached chalet occupies a coastal position on Orkney's main island, built to take advantage of natural light and positioned to face out across Scapa Flow. The layout is straightforward: everything sits on a single level, with a hallway leading to an open-plan living and dining space, two bedrooms, and a shower room. The double bedroom fits a 4ft 6in bed; the second has two single 3ft beds. A separate utility room houses coin-operated washing and drying machines shared with neighbouring properties.
The kitchen is equipped for proper cooking, with an electric oven and hob, microwave and fridge. The living area has a corner sofa and 40-inch TV. Essentials including heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi are covered. One parking space is provided on-site. No smoking inside.
The location puts Orkney's main attractions within short reach: the Italian Chapel, the Churchill Barriers visible from the property, and Kirkwall with its 10th-century St Magnus Cathedral are all nearby. Neolithic sites including the Stenness Standing Stones and Ring of Brodgar lie a little further out. This suits anyone wanting a self-catering base to explore the islands at their own pace, whether for a week or a shorter stay.

Absolutely beautiful place. Very comfortable and spotlessly clean. Wish we were staying longer. Beautiful view. We only arrived late last night, so haven't done much exploring. We will certainly come back. We're staying in number 4 chalet.

Given how costs have soared since COVID, Rick works have managed to keep their prices reasonable, unlike many places that have simply doubled their prices "because they can". The chalet we had is only a 1 room unit with separate shower room and toilet. There are no cooking facilities, only a toaster and very small fridge. The bed was comfortable and sheets and linen (towels provided) were immaculate. It's a lovely self contained unit set up on the main road between St Margaret's Hope and Kirkwall. Regular bus service runs right outside the place and it's relatively cheap for a return bus which runs late into the night. We've used the place 3 times now, as have my biking friends. Great place, highly recommended.

Beautiful refurbished little house - lovely kitchen/living area with TV and ample space and tools to cook and eat with guests if you wanted. Bedrooms are thoughtfully supplied with comfy beds, ample storage and handy bedside lamps. Bathroom was smart and cosy thanks to the huge heated towel rail. Every question you could have about the facilities is answered either in the welcome pack or the discrete labels just where you need them. The lovely decor inside can't hope to compare to the incredible view outside though - ever-changing sea and sky. Absolutely outstanding- thank you, Rockworks.
