About Ethos Hotel

Step into a room at Ethos Hotel and there's more space than the usual city hotel offers, plus a fridge and microwave that make it easy to store and heat your own food rather than relying on room service. It's a small property, just 18 rooms, on Western Road in Oxford, within walking distance of the city centre. Upkeep is a little inconsistent, and a few rooms could do with some freshening up, so it's worth bearing in mind if that matters to you.

Breakfast is a genuine highlight, generous and varied, and there's a restaurant and bar on site for the rest of the day, along with a snack bar for something quicker. Guests can also use an indoor swimming pool and a spa and sauna, useful after a day of sightseeing, and the garden offers a spot to sit outside. Air conditioning, free WiFi and a lift are all standard, and the hotel also handles meetings and weddings with dedicated meeting rooms and event space.

The staff are consistently described as helpful and friendly, which counts for a lot when you're navigating a new city. Free on-site parking is available, pets are welcome, and there's luggage storage and concierge support for anything else you need sorted. Oxford's centre is close enough to reach on foot, making this a practical base for exploring.

When we pulled up to the address i was thinking this is not what we had booked! But, at check in the staff were friendly and welcoming. We were shown to our room and it was clean , larger than expected and modern. The shower was amazing, the best one i have had for my whole holiday, the bed was very comfortable. We had breakfast the next morning and there was nothing to fault. The location was an easy walk to the town centre and any activities. This was a lovely, quiet hotel full of surprises. N

Location is quite good being a 10 minute walk into town and a 2 minute walk to the Thames Path. Rooms are a great size with comfortable beds, good AC/heating systems, a mini fridge and modern bathrooms. Service was good but they were really busy during breakfast and only one staff member on. Food was average but overall fine!

On arrival we were a little surprised of the building itself, it's appearance did not really match the website pictures. That being said we were quickly shown to our room, which was across the street. The room was on the ground floor of what appears to be the house opposite. Our initial impression was the overwhelming smell of damp, and very tired overall appearance. We very quickly returned to the reception ( the house across the street) and as a couple in our senior years have come to expect better. We were quickly offered an alternative room above the reception area, up 3 flights of stairs. This room was somewhat better, but again was tired, lacking maintenance and not at all representative of the website images. We were only booked for one night so made the best of it. The beds comprising of one sheet and a blanket not duvet. Breakfast in the very cramped reception/dining area didn't go to well, we had to ask for pretty much everything as thay had topped anything up from previous diner's. A small family from overseas arrived, and at 7 mins passed the alloted time, were denied a cooked breakfast. What a very sad representation of English hospitality. We felt duty-bound to explain this was not how most people and places in this country usually are. We wished the well on there travels. Just a note to anyone who books this hotel - apon being greeted by the reception representative, we were ask to deposit £150 on a card with them, despite the hotel being paid for in full. We politely refused. Overall impression - Initial appearance not representative of the website images at all. Rooms - Very tired and hostel like. Never again.

Parking was unclear from the get-go, staff wanted us to leave car outside on double yellows to check-in; parking inspectors paced up and down the road watching us. Room was absolutely filthy and had very overwhelming smell of mould and damp. Were already late for dinner reservations, when we returned to the hotel, reception was shut so was unable to dispute the room, leaving us no choice but to leave in the middle of the night. There were 3 de-humidifiers and 6+ air fresheners throughout the room to cover the damp smell, one chemical air freshener left inside the fridge, old food and mould lined the fridge seals. Electricals in the room had not been PAT tested in 3+ years and old stickers had been left on fridge, hairdryer, radiator, dust and grime covered many of the surfaces in the room, the floor was sticky, there was no duvet, only sheets and 2 x dirty blankets, after sitting on the bed I was covered in bite marks and that was our sign to run away! Embarrassing for the price paid, no regard for customer satisfaction, I've never been so disgusted and shocked by a 4-star accommodation. 2 star at best.
