About The Maynard

The Maynard sits on the main road through Grindleford, a stone-built village on the eastern side of the Hope Valley. The Victorian building was put up by the Duke of Rutland's estate and has been a hotel for most of its life; a thorough refurbishment has brought the interiors up to a boutique standard without stripping out the original stonework and high ceilings.

Nineteen bedrooms are spread over two floors, most looking out across the valley towards Eyam Moor. Rooms are dressed in muted colours with good linen, White Company toiletries, coffee from a local roaster and organic still and sparkling water. Sizes vary from compact doubles up to larger rooms with seating areas and roll-top baths. A cooked breakfast is included in every rate, which is worth factoring in when comparing prices.

Downstairs there is a bar and a restaurant serving modern British food, with a menu that leans on Derbyshire suppliers and changes through the year. The outdoor terrace and beer garden are the strongest feature in good weather, with a long view down the valley. The Chatsworth Suite is a separate function space used for weddings and corporate events, so it is worth checking what is on if you want a quiet weekend.

Padley Gorge and the Longshaw Estate are both a short walk from the door, and the gritstone edges at Froggatt and Curbar are close by for climbers and scramblers. Grindleford station is a ten-minute walk, with trains to Sheffield and Manchester, and Chatsworth, Bakewell and Hathersage are all within fifteen minutes by car. It suits walkers, cyclists and couples wanting somewhere smarter than a pub but not formal.

We had a really lovely stay at The Maynard. The staff were attentive, welcoming, and genuinely friendly throughout our visit which made the whole experience feel very comfortable and relaxed. The hotel itself was beautiful. From the outside it has that countryside charm, but inside everything felt modern, stylish, and very well looked after. One thing that really stood out to me was the White Company amenities which added a really nice touch. The gardens outside looked beautiful and peaceful, although it was a bit too cold during our stay to properly enjoy them. There was plenty of parking available which made things easy. The location was perfect for us as well. It is surrounded by nature and countryside in every direction, with great walking routes nearby, but still close enough to shops and the city when needed. We chose this hotel because it was well connected to other towns and cities around the Peak District, and it worked perfectly as a base for exploring the area. Breakfast was included in our package and was excellent. The food was filling, fresh, and very well done. Would definitely stay here again.

We visited for lunch whilst holidaying near Hathersage. We wanted something different from the more standard meals on offer in local pubs. The service and quality of food were both excellent. There was an impressive menu choice available. I have a prawn allergy and when I asked about the sauce with the cod was told that the chef would make it for me to order to ensure it was safe for me to eat. My cod was cooked to perfection as was the duck enjoyed by my husband and the chicken by my father.

We had a truly delightful foodie evening in the beautifully maintained garden at the Maynard on Friday. The food was absolutely wonderful and the staff were very helpful and friendly. A special thank you to Bethan, who let us taste two of the wines when we couldn’t decide which one to get, which was greatly appreciated. The beef carpaccio was the star of the show in my opinion, beautiful flavours and attention to detail - what appeared to be crispy capers were a very welcome surprise in the dish. The ravioli was rich and creamy and punchy in flavour, very comforting and the portion size was just right. My partner had the cauliflower pakoras with the creamy pea purée which were gorgeous, followed by the Dahl which tasted as though it had been simmered in fresh vegetable broth. All of this was paired with a bottle of the Wild House rosé which was a delight to drink in the summer sun at golden hour. We will definitely be back as soon as we can.

The Maynard was a delightful surprise. It’s a country hotel that has been beautifully renovated; the interior design is tasteful and modern while keeping its character. In the restaurant, the main course of cod was perfectly cooked and full of flavour. While my room was on the smaller side, the high quality of the furnishings and finish made it feel cozy rather than cramped. Coupled with the attentive service, it was a very enjoyable stay.
