About Bracken Hide Hotel
Portree, the Isle of Skye's harbour town, is the base for exploring the Scorrybreac Trail and the hill known as The Lump, and it's here on Struan Road that Bracken Hide Hotel makes its home. This is an adults-only property with 27 rooms, each finished in a distinctive pod-style design with en-suite bathrooms, strong water pressure and views out towards the surrounding mountains. Drinks in the room are on offer too, for settling in after a day on the trails.
There's a restaurant and bar on site serving breakfast and dinner, and a small spa area with a sauna and cold plunge pool for guests wanting to unwind. Free on-site parking is provided, useful given the hotel's position away from the harbour centre. Some visitors have found the rooms pricier than expected, though the design and setting go some way to justifying it.
Beyond the hotel, Portree offers fishing, watersports, pubs and restaurants all within easy reach, alongside entertainment options nearby. It makes a comfortable, characterful base for walking the Scorrybreac Trail or simply taking in the view over the water.

Really cool hotel, beautiful, new. The rooms have everything you could want. Everyone is very nice. I think my only qualm was we had to stay at the top of the mountain, which was beautiful!! BUT it was a major hike to get up and down to our room and there was no golf-cart service. It made me not want to go to the room…. We paid for the bigger room, but ended up paying for it with the hike. Really beautiful though!

Stayed at The Bracken Hide in Portree and had a great experience. Staff were courteous, helpful, and made everything easy from arrival onward. We stayed in one of the “most accessible” cabins, which turned out to be a very good call given the cold weather and driving rain when we arrived. For that alone, I’d recommend thinking carefully before booking one of the cabins that requires a steeper climb—maybe fine in perfect weather, but less appealing when Skye decides to be Skye. Our cabin, or “hide,” was the perfect size for two. Very comfortable, well laid out, and with a great view over Loch Portree. It seemed like most of the cabins likely offer a similar view, which is a big plus. The property also has a sauna and plunge pool, which was a nice surprise. Not the first thing you might think of for a Scottish trip, but definitely worth taking advantage of—so bring a swimsuit (or roll the dice, your call). The on-site restaurant is excellent and absolutely worth mentioning on its own—really strong food, a welcoming atmosphere, a great way to start your stay, and a major convenience after a day out exploring. The manager, Paula, stands out in particular—helpful, knowledgeable, and great with recommendations. Worth seeking her out during your stay. Comfortable stay, beautiful setting, and a smart base for exploring Skye. Highly recommend. Would stay again.

Our check-in was quick and efficient, but the luggage process could definitely be improved. We had three large suitcases after a long road trip, and we were asked to carry them into the lobby so the receptionist could place a sticky note with our room number on each one before they were delivered by golf cart. We didn't really understand this process, since the luggage still had to be loaded onto the golf cart outside anyway. It felt like an unnecessary extra step. For a hotel at this price point, I expected a more seamless luggage service. When we arrived at our room, our first impression wasn't great. There was bird poop right outside the door, and it didn't look fresh. We also noticed spider webs around the chairs on the patio, which made it feel like the area hadn't been cleaned properly before our arrival. The room itself is small, which is understandable, but the layout isn't very functional. There aren't enough hooks or places to hang clothes or towels, and there's almost nowhere to put toiletries in the bathroom. The toilet kept running throughout the night. Another issue was the humidity. The room felt damp and musty, so we had to keep the air conditioning on all night just to feel comfortable, even though the weather was already cool. On the positive side, the bed was comfortable, and the complimentary water and snacks were a nice touch. The breakfast staff were friendly, and breakfast itself was good. Overall, I felt the hotel was a bit overpriced for the experience. With better housekeeping, a more functional room design, and a smoother luggage process, the overall stay would be much more enjoyable.

This is a vastly overpriced hotel given the poor utilities and undertrained service. First, the shower ran out of hot water after just aroun ten minutes. It turns out each room relies on a tiny water heater that takes half an hour to refill. We only discovered this after the hot water cut out and we had to ask the front desk. While the staff claimed this should have been explained at check-in and listed in the brochure, it was completely absent from both. Second, the in-room Wi-Fi was incredibly unstable and constantly disconnected. In a rural location with already poor mobile coverage, this made coordinating and communicating with travel companions in other rooms an absolute nightmare. Lastly, there is no landline phone in the room to contact the front desk. Because the cabins are spaced far apart and a long walk from the main building, anyone without a local mobile line (which applies to most international travelers) has to walk all the way over just to ask a question. It is incredibly poorly thought out. I cannot recommend this hotel at all. While the views and the room design are admittedly nice, the core utilities and service are severely lacking. It is overpriced compared to other options in Portree, and the quality of the stay doesn’t come close to matching the premium price tag.
