About Seal Cottage

Seal Cottage is a small, adults-only bed and breakfast at Aird Bernisdale, just outside Portree on the Isle of Skye. Its cottage character sets the tone for a quiet, low-key stay rather than a large hotel experience, with a garden and outdoor seating area where guests can sit and take in the surroundings.

Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms and drinks provided, and breakfast is included to start the day. Free WiFi and free on-site parking are both available, and reception operates around the clock, so arrival times can be flexible.

The location suits those keen to get out and about, with walking and cycling routes close by, along with fishing, golf and horse riding in the area. A pub or bar and a restaurant are also within easy reach for evening meals, and there is entertainment nearby for those wanting more to do after dark.

We can't rate this accommodation high enough! We had an absolutely magical time and we fell asleep watching the sun setting over the sleepy seals! Absolutely magical. The host was super friendly, we had a hard time leaving, so much we would have wanted to stay some more and just chat enjoying that gorgeous view. Bed is quite small indeed, but other than that we had everything we needed and more. Can't wait to be back. Alex & Alex.

A wonderful, simple place to stay on Skye. A rustic location, but that much closer to what makes Skye interesting. Comfortable and cozy. Highly recommend.

Sorry to be realistic, but it's not a cottage! It's literally a tool shed transformed into a mini-apartment. The bed is very small, with the mattress falling to one side. A larger bed would easily fit. The bathroom is quite dark and lacks some shelves, as is the shower. The towels were scratchy and didn't smell good. The apartment felt quite damp. It's about 15 minutes from Portree, so if you want to cook, be aware that the nearest market is quite far away. The location is enviable, right on the loch, which you can also access for a pleasant walk. The breakfast basket for the next day was appreciated. Free parking For a few nights on the Isle of Skye, it's still acceptable. I would have given it 3 stars if, in response to the review on Booking.com, the owner hadn't offended me privately by insinuating falsehoods. I suggest they handle criticism better for future guests.

I drove seven hours from Edinburgh and arrived at Seal Cottage around 5:40 PM on a rainy afternoon. Upon my arrival, the host told me that I could not stay because booking for only two adults and having a daughter stay as well was a violation of the rules. He also told me to leave, stating that a refund would not be given. We explained that the child could sleep in the bed shared by the couple and asked him to allow it, but he was not convinced at all. He then claimed it was my fault. However, having searched for the accommodation on Google Maps, I found that the first step of the search criteria allowed me to select only the number of adults. Typically, elementary school students accompanying two adults do not need to be counted as adults, and there have been no issues with staying in Korea, Japan, the US, Thailand, Indonesia, Italy, the Maldives, Malaysia, Hong Kong, or Taiwan under the same conditions. Furthermore, the day before—April 9th—I had stayed at the Courtyard Hotel in Edinburgh under the same conditions. Additionally, I am currently staying at a hotel in Portree, where I am writing this, after obtaining their understanding that although it is a room for two adults, we can stay together without an extra bed. If limiting the occupancy to only two adults was a critical and strictly enforced rule, the host should have at least notified the guest of this important detail multiple times in advance. However, the four confirmation emails sent prior to the stay only provided location information and contained no details regarding the number of guests. This notification is crucial because tourists visiting the Isle of Skye are generally from the European continent, even if it is nearby, and like me, they may have come from other continents such as Asia or the Americas. I traveled 20 hours to reach Edinburgh and drove another 7 hours to get to Seal Cottage. The host refused to let me stay, blaming me solely on my own fault with a menacing look. Ultimately, unable to stay, I wandered around in the rain for two hours on a rainy night before finally managing to find a hotel. He ruined an important vacation with my family. He simply told me to leave, stating that he could not issue a refund or allow me to stay. Alternatively, he suggested that only two of the three family members stay, or that I pay double the cost to purchase an additional room that I wouldn't even use. None of these were rude demands that I could accept. His email stated that he was staying with his family and children, but I cannot believe it. If he were truly a father raising a child, he could not have treated me so badly when I had traveled a long distance with my young daughter. I can only conclude that he either refused to accept customers to get money or wanted double the amount.
