Heron’s Wood at Greyfriars

Photo: Martin Sutton

Winchelsea sits on the edge of the High Weald, its village lanes and working farm shop within walking distance of Heron's Wood at Greyfriars. The coast is a mile away; Camber Sands' dunes lie six miles further on. This ground-floor wing of an 1819 stone mansion overlooks the ruins of a 13th-century abbey, its grounds dotted with original features—stone mullion windows, high ceilings, a working fireplace—that anchor the space in its long history.

The layout spreads across one level. Two bedrooms sleep five: one has a zip-and-link emperor bed with an ensuite shower, the other a double-over-single bunk (the top bunk suits children only). The main bathroom holds a bath with shower; there is also a separate toilet and a cloakroom. The open-plan kitchen and living area centres on an original Victorian Gothic fireplace, now housing a wood burner. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking; the living room has a television and views toward the abbey grounds. An enclosed garden contains a private wood-fired hot tub, seating and a barbecue. Parking for two cars is provided on site. Underfloor heating runs throughout, controlled room by room. Bed linen, towels, Wi-Fi and electricity are included; logs for the burner can be ordered. The property is non-smoking and welcomes one pet.

The people who own this place are nosey! Don’t park in the lay-by which is absolutely nothing to do with them or they will stand at there fence (CAROLINE) and watch you then walk around onto the road and walk past your car and look into it prob looking for things to steal or spy on you! There’s prob hidden cameras in the rooms and toilets! Get a life instead of being nosey!

We had a fantastic stay at Eagles Nest, the apartment was warm, comfortable with everything you could need. The hosts met us and were very helpful, Caroline showed us around the apartment and was always on hand to help. The views were fantastic, and we, and our dog, had a very restful stay

We had a fabulous short stay at Herons Wood annex. Caroline has created a beautifully simple yet stylish bolt hole here in Winchelsea that was particularly brilliant as it is the first place we have stayed in a long time that had a truly dog-proof garden space. It makes such a difference to the stress levels once you know your four-legged friend can run around without risk of escape - and if you have a spaniel then that's no mean feat. The log-fired hot tub was much appreciated after a windy day on the beach, and Caroline's detailed recommendations of where to eat, drink and beach-wander were faultless. We rarely go back to places we have stayed before as it's always nice to try somewhere new, but I'd come back here again for sure, and am already recommending it to friends and family.
