Small riverside campsite at an inn in Shropshire with showers and a pub serving good-value food.

About Unicorn Inn

Unicorn Inn is a compact campsite attached to a working pub in Hampton Loade, on the Severn. The setting is the main draw: the site sits right by the river, and the railway station is just a short walk away. Being small means it stays relatively quiet, though busy periods do occur.

Facilities are basic—showers are available, and the pub serves food with dietary options. The site includes a play area and pygmy goats, which appeals to families. Staff are reported as welcoming. The pub itself offers reasonably priced meals, so there is food and drink on site without leaving. Maintenance can be patchy, so standards may vary from visit to visit.

Very good! I just spent a weekend there with a family group as a mixture of staying in the hotel and on the campsite. The rooms are basic but the price accurately reflects that so no problem. The setting is stunning with lots to do nearby, cute villages and a stream train service 5 mins walk away. The staff are super friendly and nice and took every opportunity to chat and be polite. I think this pleasant attitude spilled out to the people staying on the site to create a generally pleasant atmosphere on the campsite. The bar was well staffed so even though the site was busy (hot summer weekend) we never had to wait to be able to get food or drinks.

We stayed at the Unicorn Inn at Hampton Loade, set right on the banks of the River Severn, and it’s a great, relaxed stop-off location. It’s only a five-minute walk to Hampton Loade station on the Severn Valley Railway, making it easy to visit Bridgnorth or Kidderminster without moving the van. We arrived in the dark, but the site was easy to find with sat nav, and our pitch (number 26) was completely flat with paving slabs, which made setup very straightforward. The access road is a fairly steep single-track lane down into the valley, but manageable. The pitches are nicely spaced with hedging between them, giving a good sense of privacy, and there’s a mix of electric and non-electric options. The toilet block was clean and basic (we didn’t use the showers), and entry is via a fob with a refundable £20 deposit. The pub is a real highlight—friendly staff, cosy atmosphere, and good value food (around £13 for a main, £6.95 for kids’ meals), although it can get busy at peak times. There’s a small playground, a goat enclosure, and plenty of ducks around the river (worth noting they’re quite noisy early in the morning). Mobile signal is limited, but there is Wi-Fi in the pub. The site felt safe and family-friendly, and fairly quiet when we visited at the end of March. You can also walk along the river directly from the site. We would definitely return—it’s a convenient and enjoyable place to stay.

Brilliant pub/campsite on the river. Excellent food! Highly recommend the Sunday dinners, probably one of the best I've ever had! Also very dog friendly

Extremely disappointed with our return visit. We’ve used this site twice before for short stays and found it peaceful, a great location, friendly and very reasonably priced. Unfortunately, bank holiday weekend was completely different. Felt extremely overcrowded with the sheer number of tents and seems to be a chav magnet! Cars driven way too fast on site full of men drinking and women hanging out the windows. Engines running with loud music continually. Tents playing drum and bass until 2am. Cannabis smoked throughout. Shouting and swearing. Just general antisocial behaviour that despite owners efforts could not be kept under control. Toilet modern but not clean. Final straw was a fight between two men that couldn’t be controlled. After continued attempts at contacting number provided throughout the evening I visited Saturday morning to relay my disappointment to the owner. His response was that he likes to keep everyone happy - If I’m someone who goes to bed early I wouldn’t be happy that night either as they were having an outdoor disco on the patio until 1am. Pretty much the same as all responses to negative reviews I’ve not read online. Instead of taking comments on board, arguing with or discrediting them. We’re experienced campers and haven’t had a night as bad as this before. I understood the music rules before arriving, we brought our speaker too, but there’s general curtesy for fellow campers that’s completely uncontrolled here. On a final note, disappointing to see a small number fishing despite national coarse fishing close season. Appreciate the refund given upon early departure. We won’t be returning.
