What guests say
We stayed at Bartley Lodge as part of a Paulton's Park stayover deal. Located 10 minutes from the park and set in gorgeous surroundings it was ideal for our family overnight stay. However, and no fault of the hotel, we were in the midst of the May heatwave and it was 31+ degrees. The family room we were in had one small window and a small fan. This was not sufficient to bring the room temperature down and in the end we soaked towels and lay them on the children to help them sleep. You might argue that a hotel needs to be ready for all eventualities and perhaps you would be right, but the record breaking temperatures were very unexpected. The facilities themselves were good and included a small pool which the children enjoyed a post-breakfast swim. There was a bar, a dining room, conservatory and lovely outdoor space. Checkout the photos, a wedding took place on the day we stayed with one to follow the next day so it clearly has great character and charm. Some of the interior including the main hall and stairs harked back to a previous age. We had dinner and breakfast here and were impressed with the food although due to the busy nature of two weddings to deal with, service was a little slow. However, as we were in no rush whatsoever it did not impact negatively on our stay. Given the location and proximity to Paulton's Park, this hotel really is ideal for a family overnight stay. #familydadventures

Very disappointing and underwhelming overall. Positives: Reception and staff were friendly, and our room was lovely and clean. Negatives: Overall decor: Very dated. The main restaurant felt more like a layout of a canteen with padded chairs. Afternoon Tea: Awful. The sandwiches were unlike anything I’ve experienced before — apart from the ham and egg, it was a case of “guess what’s in this.” The egg sandwiches even had hard RIND in them, and the cakes looked like a basic supermarket pack rather than anything freshly prepared. It looked nothing like what is advertised. The waitress was lovely, and to be fair we did receive a full refund. Spa treatment: My husband’s deep tissue massage was very good. I’m a qualified holistic therapist myself and chose the “Best Foot Forward” treatment, which was extremely poor. Apart from repeated effleurage up and down the leg and briefly cupping the foot to apply cream, there was no real massage of the calves or feet. I raised this at the time and it was acknowledged and to be dealt with via email (as we booked via spabreaks.com) Evening food: Mediocre. Edible, but nothing like the food advertised on the website. Breakfast: Buffet style, and honestly, Premier Inn does it better.

The average for this hotel is about 3.9 currently and that feels about right. The house is pretty Grand and the food is definitely a positive (beer battered fish and excellentpeed), however, it really lacks atmosphere. It was really noticeable that it did not feel like there was any one person in charge and in fact it was as if no one was in charge. There was one notable member of staff who was very enthusiastic and friendly and had the air of someone who was genuine about working in hospitality which is ultimately about service but he stood out against the rest of the staff who really felt like they were under duress. They were all without exception, lovely people but it felt like morale was low Value for money wise, it does feel about right and if you were taking away someone for a special weekend, then this place would work but you will probably only go once It is family friendly and dog friendly and there is a pool which would have worked quite well if we had brought the kids

Location was perfect as we were visiting Peppa Pig World, round the corner. Stones throw from the local town, where we explored and dined for the evening. Breakfast was great! Hot prompt food, attentive staff and a good selection of continental options. Our room was average unfortunately. Very unfinished, and tatty in places. Wallpaper hanging off the wall, iron burn mark in the carpet. Such a shame really. There was no shower gel in the dispenser, luckily we remembered to bring our own. Upon leaving our room ready for breakfast, the corridor was littered with people’s plates, bowls and Indian takeaway containers which stank out the corridors. Really unpleasant to walk through.
