Camping in Southampton

Southampton itself is too built-up for camping, but the city is ringed by some of the best camping country in southern England. To the east, the gentle farmland around the Hamble estuary and the villages between Southampton and Portsmouth offer small, family-run sites within a few miles of the city, ideal for visitors who want an easy drive in for the day and a quiet rural base at night. To the west and south-west, the New Forest National Park begins within twenty minutes of the city centre and holds some of the country's largest and longest-established campsites, set among ancient woodland and open heath grazed by free-roaming ponies.

The terrain around Southampton is mostly flat to gently rolling, with the New Forest's mix of woodland, heath and boggy valley bottoms giving campers real variety within a small area. Weather follows the typical pattern for England's south coast: a maritime climate that is milder than inland areas in winter but prone to sudden showers rolling in off the Solent at any time of year, so a decent waterproof pitch and good drainage matter more here than they might further inland. Wild camping is not legally permitted anywhere in Hampshire, including the New Forest, where the misconception that it is allowed catches out many first-time visitors; camping is restricted to registered sites and the Forestry England campsites within the forest itself.

The best months for camping around Southampton run from May to September, when New Forest sites are fully open and the ponies, cattle and pigs that graze the forest are most visible, though many touring sites nearer the city operate on a more limited March-to-October season. Spring and early autumn offer a quieter, cooler alternative with fewer midges and lower prices, while high summer brings warm evenings well suited to the coastal and estuary sites around Hamble.
