About Sopwell House

Sopwell House is a Georgian manor house set in twelve acres of grounds a short drive south of St Albans city centre, built around an original house with later wings added for its spa, conference and leisure facilities. The 126 bedrooms range from traditional country-house rooms in the main house to more contemporary suites in the newer wings.

The hotel's spa is one of the larger facilities of its kind in Hertfordshire, with an indoor pool, thermal suite and treatment rooms, alongside a country club membership used by both hotel guests and local members. Dining runs across several venues on site, including a brasserie and a more formal restaurant, with produce drawn where possible from Hertfordshire suppliers.

Its position just off the A1057 makes it an easy drive from the M1 and M25, while still leaving St Albans city centre and the cathedral within about fifteen minutes on foot or a short taxi ride, making it a popular choice for both weekend breaks and business stays that want some distance from the town itself.

Had the most wonderful stay here celebrating my 25th birthday. My check in with Holly was incredible, she is so friendly, chatty and such a lovely girl. She knew we were celebrating my birthday and she made it so special from beginning to end, as did everyone on the front desk. You can tell they really care about their guests. The spa was excellent. Destiny, Catalina, Rachel & Sophie were so welcoming and really helped the spa feel relaxing. We were also very lucky with the weather, it felt like being abroad! You can order drinks to your sun loungers and the selection is wonderful. The service was impeccable. We upgraded to one of the Mews Suites, and I am so glad we did because it was absolutely gorgeous. The housekeeping team really put their heart into cleaning the rooms and it shows. The whole room felt like luxury. Dining in the Brasserie was one of the best meals I have had in a while, breakfast was really nice and there is so much to choose from! At dinner, the slow cooked beef was so tasty. Amelia & Vincenzo were really professional and made the experience unforgettable! Thank you so much again for such a perfect stay, I will recommended this hotel to everyone!

Had a lovely long weekend stay here. Breakfast buffet was varied and delicious. The spa facilities were clean and the water warm. The hotel staff kindly allowed us to switch rooms for one night when we found our room to be in earshot of an ongoing g wedding party disco. The rooms were spacious and well decorated. Overall a relaxing and enjoyable stay Highly recommend.

Definitely not overhyped except for the massages. The place is relaxing, beautiful and the rooms are modern. Rooms - 5/5 unless you get the rooms that have the bath tubs instead of the walk-in showers then it’s 4/5. Service- service in octagon bar and Omboo were great but generally the service at the front desk is below standard of the hotel so 2/5. Location- it’s 30 minutes drive away from London so perfect for a weekend getaway so 5/5. Restaurants- the food in both restaurants are very decent so you don’t need to leave the hotel grounds so 4/5. Spa- the spa is beautiful but the massages were 7/10. Had the signature massage and definitely had better massages in London. Overall would go back for a quick spontaneous getaway.

I was there for my husbands work long service presentation and dinner. Staff very smart, efficient, polite and helpful. Grounds were amazing as we had a photographer taking photos. Most of the party stayed the night and enjoyed the facilities. Unfortunately we had to leave due to commitments the following day, so cant rate the room. Going off comments from the party, they were very happy with their rooms, if that helps?
