Christmas Light Trails in the UK: Where to Go in 2026

Illuminated after-dark trails through gardens and parkland have become a fixture of the British December. The best-known for 2026, what they cost in time and planning, and how to choose.

Over the last decade or so, the illuminated light trail has become one of the defining British Christmas outings: a timed evening walk through a garden or estate lit with installations, projections and music. They are expensive compared with a market, and they sell out, but done well they are genuinely memorable — and they are one of the few things that make December's early darkness a feature.

At a glance

When: mid November to early January at most venues. Cost: ticketed, with timed entry. Booking: weekends sell out early. Best for: a memorable evening that makes the most of the early dark.

The established trails

Christmas at Kew, London

The trail at Kew Gardens in Richmond is one of the originals, about three kilometres through the gardens after dark. In 2026 it runs from 13 November into early January, with new installations alongside returning favourites.

Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire

The palace outside Woodstock combines an illuminated trail through its grounds with themed decorations inside the State Rooms — the story of Cinderella for 2026. It runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with a Christmas market in the Great Court until 20 December.

Christmas at the Botanics, Edinburgh

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh marks its tenth year of Christmas trails in 2026, running from 19 November to 30 December. Allow an hour to an hour and a half. It pairs naturally with Edinburgh's Christmas market.

Glow Wild, Wakehurst, Sussex

Kew's country garden near Ardingly runs a quieter, lantern-based trail on selected evenings from late November into early January — more handmade than high-tech, and well suited to younger children.

How to choose and plan

Book early, and go midweek

Tickets are sold in timed entry slots, and weekend evenings in December sell out weeks ahead. Midweek slots are cheaper at many venues and far less crowded.

Pick a slot with the weather in mind

Trails run in the rain. Most do not refund for weather, so waterproofs are essential and a dry week is a bonus, not a given.

Think about the walk

Most trails are one to three kilometres, often on grass or gravel, and in the dark. Check accessibility information if you are bringing a buggy or wheelchair; several trails offer accessible routes or specific sessions.

Making a night of it

Which suits whom

The bigger trails, with projections and large-scale installations, suit older children and adults. Smaller lantern trails such as Glow Wild are gentler and shorter, better for young children who will tire on a long walk. Several venues also run adults-only evenings.

A trail takes an hour or two, so it works best as the evening of a day spent elsewhere. Kew is easy to combine with a London weekend, Blenheim with Oxford, and Edinburgh's with the city's market. For more ideas, see our guides to stately homes at Christmas and London at Christmas.
