About Milsoms Kesgrave Hall

Kesgrave Hall is a Georgian mansion set in around 38 acres of woodland and grounds a few miles east of Ipswich. It was a private house, then a school, and has been run as a hotel by Milsom Hotels since 2008. The approach is up a long drive through trees, but the interior is deliberately informal: no reception desk in the traditional sense, no dress code, and a bar and brasserie that fill up with local diners as well as residents.

There are 27 en-suite bedrooms, split between the main hall and a converted stable and garden block. Styles range from simple, well-priced rooms in the eaves to larger garden rooms with private terraces and outdoor hot tubs. Decor is contemporary rather than country-house chintz, with good beds, walk-in showers and roll-top or freestanding baths in the higher grades. Dogs are accepted in designated rooms.

The brasserie is the centre of the operation, serving all day from an open kitchen with a wood-fired oven and grill. The menu is broad and unfussy, built on Suffolk and Essex produce, with a large outdoor terrace that is heated and covered for most of the year. Afternoon tea is popular, and breakfast is cooked to order. A woodland spa was added more recently, with treatment rooms using Elemis products, a relaxation area and an outdoor hot tub.

It works well for couples wanting a country base without formality, for small groups celebrating a birthday, and for guests using Ipswich, Woodbridge and the Deben estuary. Snape Maltings, Sutton Hoo and the Suffolk coast are all within half an hour by car. Parking is plentiful and free, and the hotel is a regular wedding venue, so it is worth checking whether an event is running when you book.

We had a wonderful experience at Milsoms, Kesgrave Hall. The location is absolutely beautiful, with stunning grounds and a lovely terrace that made the whole setting feel relaxed and luxurious. The food was absolutely stunning — every dish was fresh, full of flavour, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. Everything we tried was delicious and beautifully presented. The service was excellent throughout. The staff were attentive, professional, and very smart, making us feel well looked after from start to finish. A fantastic venue for a special meal or occasion — we will definitely return.

One of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. I visited this restaurant with my family and friends expecting to enjoy a pleasant meal together. Instead, we were treated in a way that left us extremely disappointed. We were a group of around 10 people, and I simply wanted to order food for myself. To my surprise, we were told that the entire table had to order. I have never experienced anything like this before. Every customer should have the freedom to decide whether they want to eat or not without being pressured or forced into ordering. What made the situation even worse was the attitude of the staff. From management to the team on the floor, we felt unwelcome and poorly treated throughout our visit. Rather than making us feel valued as customers, it felt as though our presence was an inconvenience. Customer service is the foundation of any successful restaurant, and unfortunately this place failed badly in that regard. Respect, professionalism, and basic hospitality were completely lacking during our visit. After spending time and money at many restaurants over the years, I can honestly say this was one of the most disappointing experiences I have encountered. Based on how we were treated, I would not return and cannot recommend this restaurant to others. Very disappointing.

My family & I have been dining at Milsoms Kesgrave Hall for years - solely for their incredible food, beautiful setting, and calm atmosphere. However, up until our visit last month, the wait staff service has been consistently...less than desirable. But the food has always been that spectacular that we always persisted. Thankfully when we went to eat recently, we were taken care of by Brandon & Emily - two young wait staff that were a breath of fresh air compared to what we usually brace ourselves for. Emily was our waitress & did a great job of being welcoming, enthusiastic, and responsive with our questions & requests (things such as: "Could I have another glass of wine when you're ready, please?") Brandon also did a great job of continually walking around the restaurant floor to check in with tables, ask if anything was needed, and overall was just a constant presence for diners which again, is completely alien to the wait staff's usual approach of huddling in a corner with their backs to diners, chatting & laughing. As for the food - it has always been consistently fantastic. The asian-fusion influence the menu seems to always have, is always a pleasure to enjoy. They just never get it wrong, the menu curators & chefs. I have never had a bad experience with the food. Strongly recommend the soft-shell crab (if it's still available!) and the panfried stonebass.

Food was lovely, service was abysmal. Arrived and decided to sit outside, table was on such an uneven surface it was unusable. Moved inside and waited 30 minutes for our ticket to be collected. We waited 15 minutes for our drinks and the water we ordered just wasn’t brought with them. Starters came and were lovely. Ordered some more drinks to come with our main. Mains arrived and were lovely, finished our mains, drinks still hadn’t come. Meal finished, plates were never cleared. Decided to just leave. A restaurant I’ve been to many times and am unlikely to return to, so disappointing to see the downfall of this place. Seems a number of other recent reviews agree…

Diners like this restaurant's delicious and freshly cooked food, with many highlighting the amazing octopus, venison, and roast beef. They also mention the beautiful setting, relaxed atmosphere, and professional, friendly staff.

Some reviews mention the service can be slow and inattentive.
