Hotels in Swansea
8 handpicked places to stay
Swansea's accommodation splits naturally along its coastline. Stay in the city centre or Maritime Quarter and you are close to the station, the market and the museums, with restaurants and nightlife on your doorstep, though the seafront proper is a short walk or bus ride away. Mumbles, at the far end of the bay, offers a more traditional seaside stay: a working harbour feel, a pier and lighthouse, and a promenade of pubs and cafes, all within easy reach of the first Gower beaches. Push further out onto Gower itself and the choice becomes rural and coastal rather than urban, with country house hotels and B&Bs set among farmland and cliff paths, best for visitors who plan to spend most of their time walking or on the beach rather than in the city.
Price and star rating in Swansea do not always map neatly onto location. Some of the most characterful places to stay are boutique conversions of older buildings in the Maritime Quarter or Mumbles rather than purpose-built hotels, and these often carry a premium for character and views over the bay. Mid-range chain hotels tend to sit in or near the city centre and offer straightforward value, particularly useful for a short break built around the market, museums or a football or rugby fixture at the Swansea.com Stadium. Guest houses and smaller B&Bs cluster in Mumbles and along Gower, and are usually the best option for walkers wanting an early start on the coast path or a late return from the beach without city-centre parking to worry about. Booking ahead for July and August is strongly advised, since Gower's popularity as a beach destination means the best-located rooms sell out well before the school summer holidays begin.
