Camping in Swansea

Camping around Swansea means, in practice, camping on Gower, since the peninsula's limestone cliffs, dune systems and farmland give the area some of the best-regarded sites in Wales, most within fifteen minutes' drive of the city centre. The terrain varies from flat, sheltered farm fields a short walk from beaches such as Three Cliffs Bay, to more exposed clifftop pitches further west towards Rhossili and Llangennith, where the wind and views are both stronger. Ground tends to be well-drained thanks to the underlying limestone, which helps sites stay usable even after wet spells, though the coast path itself can turn muddy after heavy rain.

Wild camping is not generally legal on Gower or elsewhere in Wales without landowner permission, unlike the more permissive position in Scotland, so pitching up on the coast path or in the dunes without asking first is technically trespass, even though it does happen informally in a few well-known spots. Given the number of well-run, reasonably priced campsites on the peninsula, most within walking or short driving distance of the best beaches, there is little practical reason to risk it, and doing so also puts pressure on fragile dune and cliff-top habitats that the AONB designation exists to protect.

Late May through early September is the reliable camping season, with July and August bringing the warmest weather but also the fullest sites and busiest beach car parks; booking ahead for peak weeks is essential rather than advisable. Spring and early autumn offer a good compromise, with milder crowds, decent odds of fine weather, and the added bonus of clearer light for walking the coast path, though a handful of smaller sites close for the winter months and it is worth checking opening dates before travelling in October or later.
