About Saltmoore

Saltmoore occupies a private estate at Sandsend, a few miles up the coast from Whitby, where the North York Moors meet the North Sea. Formerly known as Raithwaite Estate, the hotel was reimagined and relaunched under its current name, with 72 bedrooms and suites spread across grand principal rooms and more contemporary buildings within the grounds.

At the centre of the estate is The Sanctuary, a spa built around wellness and slow living, with an indoor pool, treatment rooms and grounds landscaped around a natural lake. Dining spans several venues, from the main house restaurant to a casual pizzeria and a brasserie, all built around seasonal, coastal and moorland produce.

Guests use Saltmoore as a base for both relaxation and exploring the coast: Sandsend's beach is a short walk away, Whitby itself is a few minutes by car, and the surrounding moors offer walking and cycling directly from the estate gates. It suits couples and groups looking for a spa-led break rather than a harbourside town centre stay.

Fantastic hotel and spa. Absolutely nothing not to like. Stayed in the beach house; rooms lovely, fresh and clean. Loved the underfloor heating in the bathroom. Good selection of complimentary refreshments. Extremely large and comfortable bed. Easy walk to main hotel building but staff very happy to transport us using the electric buggy or Tesla too. Spa very relaxing, garden areas lovely. Dined at the brasserie, exceptional food and service. Great breakfast too. Dietary needs (GF) well catered for. The staff here go above and beyond. I don't think I've ever stayed in such a friendly hotel where all staff care and clearly get along. Will 100% definitely return and recommend.

I have been a regular guest at this gorgeous hotel for over 12 years , previously known as Raithwaite Hall & Spa. It has undergone a huge refurbishment/ re-branding. A beautiful hotel in a stunning setting, close to the coast. Fabulous warm & friendly staff who make me feel really welcome & are really attentive. Bottle of chilled Prosecco waiting for me in my room, lovely thoughtful gesture- thankyou. Housekeeping first class, nothing is too much trouble & happy to provide more tea, coffee & biscuits , the rooms are spotless. Good quality bedding , comfortable beds & complimentary toiletries in the bathroom. Excellent food, imaginative menu but expensive. The service charges on the itemised restaurant bill are very misleading. I think this should be an optional service charge the discretion of the guest. The Spa has been transformed into a beautiful calming space, good sized pool, well equipped with cream coloured loungers, some showing signs of water damage & stained, so these need a deep clean . Unfortunately you can only book loungers for 2 hours each day which as a guest is quite restrictive. The spa treatments are expensive @ £140 for an hours facial etc. Maybe adding some shorter treatments with a lower price tag may be something to consider for guests who can’t stretch to £140? Lovely addition is the Wellness cafe with access to the terrace & gardens where there are more sun loungers. I had a lovely relaxing stay , feeling very well cared for as the staff go out of their way to ensure I’m ok. Thanks to all the amazing team . Sally.

First and foremost, staff here are friendly and welcoming. Location is stunning and extremely peaceful. We opted for the Chateaubriand package and it did not disappoint. Well presented, wholesome food which we both thoroughly enjoyed. As others have commented, service can be slow. I had to prompt for our Champagne which hadn’t arrived when we had commenced eating. I’ve no huge objection to paying a 12.5% service charge for dinner, however, I would at least expect for that that our glasses would be refilled by the server. Not a five star experience. Breakfast, plenty of options, cooked breakfast was excellent. Room was well equipped, very clean, albeit the room temperature in the downstairs part of the cottage was impossible to control, and appeared to switch off frequently. Spa and the gym, first class, staff lovely. Overall a really nice experience with a little uplift in service I wouldn’t hesitate to give 5 stars across the board.

Exceptional. They made my birthday one to remember and I can't thank the staff enough for their Exceptional service. Definitely book in advance for dinner, I would have liked to dine there for my birthday dinner however we were a bit late in booking. Breakfast was amazing. Thank you for making it so special.
