About Hilltop Huts

Tucked into the North Pennines National Landscape near Barnard Castle, these smart wooden pods sit behind the Moorcock Inn – a proper pub serving home-cooked food from the owners' farm, just steps from your door. Each pod sleeps up to five and comes with kettle, toaster, microwave and small fridge, plus a picnic bench outside for sunny morning coffees. Modern showers run on green energy, and there's a well-stocked shop for any forgotten essentials or barbecue supplies.

Families are well looked after: the pub's games room (pool, darts, dominoes) is a rainy-day lifesaver, while Eggleston Play Park – a 10-minute walk – has zipwires, slides and basketball. Further afield, Hamsterley Forest's Gruffalo Trail makes a great day out. With mountain biking, fishing and cycling all nearby, and the dramatic Teesdale landscapes on the doorstep, it's an ideal base for exploring the North Pennines without sacrificing creature comforts.

What visitors say

We stayed 17th April 26 for 2 nights and we had 3 pods for our party and the site to ourselves. Lovely weekend in a quiet location with wonderful views and good service. All facilities were clean and tidy; pods, showers and toilet areas. The pods were spacious and comfortable with all basic cooking items including; fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster. Great for kids to just run around and plenty of place to play, play park within a 5 minute walk. We ate in the Moorcock pub which is on site both evenings, as the food was so tasty the first evening, staff were helpful and friendly and nothing was too much hassle. Close to plenty of visitor attractions including Hamsterley Forest and High force waterfall, and Barnard castle a short 10 minute drive. We visited McFarlanes butchers in Middleton village and Barnard castle for quality sausages, burgers and pies - top butchers for local produce. We would definitely visit again,

Booked for 2 nights for my birthday. Told we could check in after 2pm. Arrived just after 3pm. No staff present and reception locked. Sign on the door to check in at the moorcock pub. Went to the pub and it was closed. We had our dog with us so could not wait for long. Rang the mobile number twice no answer. Rang the pub twice no answer. Left voicemail on both. Drove back home after half hour waiting. No return all that day to at least apologise. The next day I rang the pub and the only response I got is that the farmer must of been attending to sheep, then to say at this time all he can do is apologise! Absolutely avoid. Also after looking into one of the huts it looked like a prison cell so maybe I had a luck escape.
