About Red Lion Hotel
Shopping, dining and a theatre are all within walking distance of the Red Lion Hotel, making it a practical base for visitors who want to leave the car behind once they've arrived. The hotel sits on Red Lion Lane in the heart of Basingstoke, Hampshire, with free on-site parking for those who do drive in.
There are 63 rooms, all well-appointed, though some show their age and could do with updating. A lift serves the upper floors, and facilities include a restaurant, a bar, a garden and free WiFi throughout. Breakfast is a particular strength, with a good spread of traditional British options to set guests up for the day. The hotel also caters for weddings, and there's luggage storage for those arriving early or leaving late.
Staff are consistently helpful, which counts for a lot when the town's shops, restaurants and theatre are the main draw. It's a straightforward, central choice for anyone planning to spend their days out and about in Basingstoke rather than in their room.
What guests say
Overall, the receptionists were fantastic, very helpful and very courteous. The rooms could do with feather duster to the inside top of the windows, to remove cobwebs, The bathroom sink had to be turned off when brushing teeth due to the sink blocking, the rain shower, needed cleaning, as it sprayed over the screen and onto the sink and floor. Would I stay again??? Definitely thanks to the staff on reception, who made the stay worth it, due to their help and friendliness.

Stayed in Basingstoke to help celebrate a good friend's engagement, and stayed at this very charming hotel. The staff were super accommodating of a last minute change to travelling plans, and once checked in they couldn't do enough for me. I genuinely love the decor of the place, its warm and cosy with a rustic charm - loads of brilliant bird art prints on the wall which adds to the character of the hotel. Staff reached out to warn about potential noise being so close to Basingstoke High Street on a weekend, but it was a non-issue at all during my stay - it was a lovely place to relax and decompress after a very stressful journey. Would absolutely stay again next time I'm in Basingstoke.

Although location wasn't important to me, it turned out perfect. The staff were fantastic. Very profesional and caring. The first receptionist was a little unsure but Betheny took control and proceded above and beyond, to help. Do not book through Booking.com. they lied to me, they lied to the hotel, to steel money from me. Hiding behind booking rules. DONT use them, you will not save any money, it will cost you more in the long run.!!!!!!! The room was clean and the cleaning staff done a good job. The bar / restaurant staff were great also. All in all, a very comfortable and happy visit. Thanks girls!!!!!!

The staff here are really what sets the place apart. They will go out of their way to help you as much as they possibly can. Rooms are spacious, clean, with all the usual bits and bobs. Only issue is some rooms have awkward plug placement but always one near a table so you can dry your hair. Bathrooms are clean and modern. Would stay here over any other hotel.
