The Old Hall Hotel

We stayed for one night as we were going to a show in the Opera House which was one minutes walk away. Parts of the hotel were a little tired looking but our room was spotless. The beds were very comfortable and the shower was very hot and had good power. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. My one disappointed was the price of a glass of (not large) wine - £9.50. For what we got (taste and amount), I thought it was expensive. I would definitely stay her again

Stayed for 3 nights in June for my 50th. Got room 3 with a huge four poster bed, opposite room 2 where Mary Queen of Scots is supposed to have stayed, very friendly guy called Phil (staff) let us have a look around the room whilst it was being cleaned, also told us some fascinating stories of hauntings in the Elizabethan part of the hotel. The hotel is very laid back, staff were helpful and friendly, especially Ruth who worked on the bar, recommended really good food places and where to visit in the area, she always had a smile and was a good laugh, and the night porter (feel bad as i've forgotten his name) who again made us feel welcome and serenaded us with stories of his times playing with numerous bands. We had opted for breakfast which is a buffet type so if your a bit late up it got a bit over done and chewy, but still edible and again friendly service each morning. Building is old and a little tired, but full of history, the room was lovely and the laid back, friendly atmosphere more than made up for a bit of tired furnishings. Woukd highly recommend a stay.

We stayed here at the end of May during a beautifully sunny half-term week. Its the first time we had heard of the Old Hall Hotel let alone stay there and I have to say, it was fantastic. The staff were so friendly and knowledgeable, Alistair particularly was so welcoming, friendly and gave us a fascinating history of the hotel and Mary Queen of Scots. Four poster bedroom was fabulous, old (it is the oldest hotel in england) but the bathroom felt modern and beautifully clean. Location is excellent as a base to explore Buxton and beyond (Thors Cave, Millenium Bridge etc), breakfast was fantastic! Highly recommended.

I’m absolutely disgusted with this dirty place, I first of walked into a room with my family which wasn’t bad at all, a few appetisers and they were mediocre. We were then seated with roughly 20 people with us. From the beginning it was vile. At least 5 flys flying around the room jumping on our food. The starter came and mine was a very boring tomato soup, it came with a store bought white bread with the crust cut of as if I’m a child. No sour dough or decent bread for your guests no? Cheap tacky food. The main was also terrible, the chicken which is the most basic meat to get right was hard tough and tasted re heated in a microwave. Not enough potato or broccoli it was an absolute joke. Then onto the desert and I ordered a lemon cheese cake, the cheese part of it was literally just a mountain of whipped cream. And the base was just squished biscuit’s. What an absolute joke this is. For the money it costs I truly can’t believe the audacity of this place to serve such basic minimum effort food. The staff were lovely but completely unattended probably by a lazy manager. I honestly felt so sorry for them as it was a stressful time and they had no structure or management. Not only this but there was never anyone to ask questions. I had to go to a reception which was previously unattended and ask for the toilets. No signs at all and zero help available. My advice would be to train your staff properly get a decent manager who cares to be around and MANAGE. Buy fresh food and products. Make food to order not just re heated in a microwave. Have mesh on the windows so your guests don’t have flys jumping on food all day long. And whilst your at it give the place a clean everything was dusty. Appalling who ever is running this place needs to start putting in some effort. Also get a new chef because the one you have is shocking and can’t cook basic food nicely.
