About Monachyle Mhor
Monachyle Mhor sits on its own working farm above Loch Voil and Loch Doine in Balquhidder glen, around eleven miles from Callander, and has built a national reputation for its restaurant since the Lewis family converted the farmhouse into a hotel. Bedrooms and suites are spread across the main house and converted farm buildings, each individually decorated, with several opening onto private terraces looking down the glen.
The kitchen draws heavily on the surrounding estate, using the farm's own lamb and venison alongside foraged and locally grown ingredients, and has held recognition in the main Scottish restaurant guides for many years. A separate cafe and cookery school operate from the farm buildings, and the hotel's position deep in Rob Roy country, close to Balquhidder churchyard where MacGregor is buried, makes it a good base for exploring the quieter glens west of Callander.
Monachyle Mhor suits visitors prioritising food and scenery over proximity to a town centre, trading a short additional drive from Callander for genuine highland isolation and one of the best-regarded restaurants in the wider Trossachs and Loch Lomond area.

This place is really special. Beautiful setting, the food is amazing - probably some of the best breakfasts I've had - our room was lovely and the staff all very friendly. My son loved meeting Donald and Barbara and the farm tour and tractor ride was also a highlight.

I attended a highland wine tasting safari run by this hotel last week and would highly recommend. Tom was a fantastic guide, really knowledgeable about the wines and the food pairings were perfect. I’ve never really understood how wine and food can compliment each other but they really did at this event. The tables laid out on the front lawn for the last two courses were beautiful, with a view to die for. I am still dreaming about the venison with beetroot and the rhubarb mess. Delicious! All served so efficiently by really friendly staff. It really was a day. Playing bagpipes as we walked made it even more special. Would love to do it again one day.

We had an overnight Sunday into Monday. Super excited to try here as our friends come often. We stayed in a farmhouse room , it had everything you need, with nice touches like the shortbread and apples. There is no fridge for milk but we phoned reception and it was at our door within 5mins, in a flask. The toiletries were great too. There is obviously bigger / more luxurious rooms but to be honest we were grand in our wee room and the bed is comfy (room 3). We booked for the sauna and dip, the girl who looked after us was great - highly recommend doing this. Now for the dinner, it was £95 … we felt this was steep. The food was tasty however i wouldn’t say £95 worthy. The bar tender was excellent (the young English guy) with a true talent in making cocktails. Breakfast was good too, an interesting menu and cool to get 3 courses in the morning. Overall we had a great time, some of the service was slower than we would have liked (esp for the price tag) but pleasant. We would come back, but potentially lower our expectations!

Absolutely fabulous hotel- a very favorite of our tour of Scotland. So wonderfully charming and comfortably chic. In a location that’s beautiful, peaceful and serene. Great design, lovely staff and Tom Lewis’ cooking is beyond amazing! The bar is lively and cosy for a pre- dinner cocktail. We’d come back all the time if we didn’t live so far away. Ta!
