About Grobdale of Girthon
Getting to Grobdale of Girthon is half the adventure – you'll need a four-wheel drive and steady nerves to navigate the rough track to these remote pitches, set high on a working farm with sweeping views over glens, forests and wetlands. It's proper wild camping: no facilities whatsoever, so come fully self-sufficient, but the reward is total peace broken only by bleating sheep and the occasional passing deer.
Campfires are welcome, and the on-site farm shop supplies meat, eggs and honey to elevate your flame-cooked supper. The terrain is genuinely uneven – think gravel and loose mud – so this isn't a site for everyone, but for those seeking solitude and spectacular Dumfries and Galloway scenery, it's hard to beat. Gatehouse of Fleet (15 minutes) covers pub meals and provisions, while Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright lie within half an hour for bigger shops and restaurants.

What visitors say
We recently had the pleasure of staying at Grobdale of Girthon, specifically their 4x4/off road camping option! Sarah, Andy & Lauren (and of course Jim! 🐶) are just the nicest, most down to earth family I've ever met. The views surrounding the farm are beautiful but there was something about the farm which just felt like home! Next time, we're definitely looking to book in at one of the cottages, because Sarah was kind enough to show us around an empty one before we headed off - they are absolutely stunning and have everything you need for a restful break. The walking safari was so much fun, the place is teaming with wildlife (including golden eagles!) and of course livestock. We also bought some of the amazing produce that they make which was fairly priced and importantly delicious! My not so great phone took a photo at night - it was quite cloudy but it's a dark-sky area so you're in for some amazing views!

We are currently enjoying our second stay in The Dairy at Grobdale of Girthon. We cannot recommend this very special place enough. The location is beyond stunning and must be seen to be believed, as words and photos are not enough to do it justice. The surrounding areas have lots to be enjoyed with amazing walks, beautiful beaches and fun places to visit in abundance. The Dairy itself is clean, comfortable, stylish and very well equipped and the welcome basket is a lovely touch. The family are so friendly and welcoming and our children love helping out on the farm with them and it's also the perfect place for the four legged member of our family. We all enjoy spotting the huge variety of wildlife on offer here and we love sitting out around the firepit under the stars too, which are extraordinary thanks to Grobdale being located in the Dark Sky Park. We will be sure to come back again and again over the years, as it really is a home away from home. We would live here if we could.

We found this beautiful spot by chance - best decision we made to go to this venue - 5 star accommodation, hospitality and attention to detail. Modern, yet luxurious and very comfortable. Thank you Sarah and Andy for such an amazing place to have our holiday- thank you to for your insights and for being so helpful. Got to come back again. Marinda and Gordon (Australia).

We stayed in the Byre cottage over Christmas with our two dogs, the cottage is stunning and immaculately clean in the most idyllic location for a peaceful break. The hosts Sarah, Andy and Lauren could not do enough to make our stay a great experience including welcoming the dogs and providing a truly dog friendly experience not just the normal dogs tolerated experience in most places. They run a small farm shop on site which provides their own great quality produce including an amazing haggis which has never been a favourite of mine but after Andy’s recommendation am a convert to their local haggis. We will definitely be returning here again as it’s the ideal location for a total wind down and re-set.
