About The Batch Campsite
Perched high on the Mendips with sweeping views across the valley to Cardiff, The Batch is a wildflower meadow hideaway just three miles from Cheddar Gorge. Owner Tim keeps things deliberately simple – non-electric grass pitches, a modern shower block with flushing loos and hot water, a communal fridge-freezer – but the appeal runs deeper. Campfires are actively encouraged, and Tim can supply locally sourced bacon, sausages, trout, cheese and cider from within a three-mile radius if you order ahead. Deer, badgers and buzzards roam the surrounding woodland, and sunset here is genuinely special.
The location puts several good Somerset pubs within walking distance along the Mendip Pub Trail, including Thatchers cider farm down the hill. Hikers, climbers and mountain bikers have Cheddar's gorges and caves on the doorstep, while families appreciate the peaceful, back-to-basics atmosphere. The site sits at the end of a bumpy unadopted track, so it genuinely feels remote – though one or two visitors note facilities can feel a touch basic for some tastes. Still, if you value scenery, silence and a proper campfire over polished amenities, you'll find excellent value here.

What visitors say
Stayed for the weekend and very much enjoyed it. The field was nice and peaceful, the scenery is quite something to look at, and Tim, the owner, is a great and helpful guy. I had problems setting up my tent, Tim helped with it and that made my stay even better. The new facilities are a big plus too, I'm already looking forward to my next stay at this campsite.
