About Macdonald Portal Hotel Golf And Spa
Chester's historic centre is within easy driving distance, while closer to home there's golf, fishing, horse riding and pubs all nearby, making Macdonald Portal Hotel Golf And Spa a practical base whether the plan is sightseeing or staying put. The hotel's own golf course is a particular draw, and the surrounding Cheshire countryside gives the grounds a quiet, green setting away from city traffic.
The hotel has 85 rooms, including family and accessible options, all with en-suite bathrooms. Guests speak well of how clean and comfortable the rooms are, and the staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful. There's a restaurant serving breakfast and kids' meals, a bar, room service and packed lunches for early starts, though the food quality is said to vary from one visit to the next.
Facilities extend well beyond the rooms: an indoor swimming pool, gym, spa with sauna and steam rooms, and a garden with outdoor seating for warmer days. Meeting rooms and business services suit work trips, and free on-site parking, an EV charging point, laundry service and pets-welcome policy round out the practical side. It's a hotel built around the golf and spa, with the rest of Chester and Cheshire close enough for a day out.

Spa Day via Groupon, so review is only about these facilities. We had a lovely spa day, it was amazing value for what was provided. Had a really nice massage & facial provided by my therapist Caroline, who was lovely. We also had a two course lunch included, the portions were generous and I recommend the tandoori chicken flatbread! We didn’t use the pool itself, but did use the pool area to relax. Keep in mind that the pool is used for other purposes - there was an aqua aerobics taking place whilst we were there, so it might be worthwhile checking the schedule before booking if that’s something that might impact on you. There’s a lovely ‘relaxation room’ separate from the pool anyway. I was a little worried about the condition of the facilities after reading some reviews, but feel these are a bit exaggerated. Yes, there was some paint peeling from the ceiling in the pool area, but other than that all the facilities were well looked after and very clean

A simply wonderful stay at this hotel! I stayed with my partner the day after we got married, and we received a very welcome upgrade to our room which was just gorgeous and some very lovely complementary Prosecco and dessert! The staff in the restaurant were amazing - so caring and attentive. Thank you especially to Claire and also Chloe and Annastsia who were on shift. The facilities and lovely and the setting is even better! So calm and serene. Thanks again

Stayed 4th–5th July. Paid £369 for one night with my two children (aged 8 & 12) while attending an event at Bolesworth. I specifically chose this hotel because of the advertised swimming pool/spa facilities, thinking it would be a lovely addition to our weekend. Unfortunately, the stay was disappointing from arrival to departure. On check-in we were told by the duty manager, Virag, that children could not use the pool after 6pm unless over 14. When we went to the spa area we were then told it was actually over 16, and that the only time my children could swim was 9–11am the next morning when we would be leaving. Very frustrating when the pool was a main reason for booking. I asked to speak with the hotel manager but this was refused. The room was nowhere near what I would expect for £369/night: • No minibar • No bottled water • Hairdryer didn’t work • WiFi didn’t work • No conditioner • Shower gel almost empty • Tiny ironing board • Badly frayed/damaged curtains (photos attached) Dinner was also disappointing. Starters were acceptable, but the children’s crudités were literally a few cucumber sticks and partly cooked carrots. The mash with our main meal resembled instant Smash, and the “garden salad” was just lettuce leaves in a bowl. We had to ask multiple times for children’s sauces/condiments, which eventually arrived after one child had already finished eating. I didn’t take photos of the food as we had waited so long, the children were hungry, and at that point I wasn’t planning on writing a review — I was just trying to enjoy the evening. However, after returning to the room and finding further issues, I felt the overall experience needed sharing. We asked to speak to a manager at dinner but were told he was unavailable due to a first aid situation. We were offered complimentary desserts, which to be fair were the highlight of the meal. The night then got worse. From around 10pm–11:30pm there was a repeated noise like someone playing marbles above us every few minutes, followed by banging from 11:30pm onwards. With no phone in the room, no mobile signal and WiFi not working, we couldn’t easily contact reception and ended up turning the TV up to drown it out. Breakfast itself was ok, but again the service was poor — no greeting or explanation, simply told to go and sit down. Overall this did not feel remotely like a 4 star experience. I understand things can go wrong, but the lack of ownership, poor communication, tired room condition and lack of attention to detail were the biggest disappointments. Unfortunately, “Fawlty Towers” came to mind more than a luxury hotel stay. Would not recommend and would not return. Paying premium prices for what felt like a tired 2–3 star experience.

Joe on the front desk was absolutely amazing! He made us feel so welcome & gave us some great recommendations on how to spend our weekend. The spa facilities were beautiful and we both enjoyed our 2x 25 minute treatments. The room we stayed in (The Bridal Suite) was huge and clean, the bed was comfy & big enough for a family of 4! The restaurant in the evening was extremely nice and the staff were very friendly. We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay
