Hallagenna Cottages - Old Brock Cottage

Photo: Caroline Rolls

Bodmin Moor stretches across North Cornwall as one of the county's wildest landscapes, and Old Brock Cottage sits at its threshold on what was once farmland. The property is a former farm worker's cottage, now part of Hallagenna Cottages—a collection of traditional buildings set across five acres. From here you can walk straight onto the moor itself, which is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hallagenna Riding Stables operate opposite, so riding directly onto the moorland is possible, and the Camel Trail—a famous 18-mile cycling and walking route—lies just five minutes' drive away.

The cottage sleeps four across two bedrooms: a double and two singles. Downstairs holds the kitchen with a full range of appliances including dishwasher and washer-dryer, plus a living and dining room with woodburner and television. The bathroom is upstairs along with both bedrooms. An enclosed courtyard garden with barbecue and furniture opens from the property, and there is allocated parking on site. Essentials including electricity, heating, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi come as standard; logs for the woodburner are provided to start with.

The location suits walkers, cyclists and anyone wanting moorland exploration without leaving civilisation entirely. The Cornish coast—including Port Isaac and Padstow—is within reach by car, and an 11th-century pub sits in the village nearby. The property does not permit smoking. One well-behaved pet is welcome.

Perfect hosts with a lovely cream tea welcome. Rooms and bedding spotless, found everything we needed in the kitchen. Scenery and wildlife on the doorstep. Would heartily recommend. Denise

I think I've gone to heaven. Janine and Mick were wonderful hosts. They were happy to assist with any questions we had but left us to discover their beautiful area. The old barn cottage was clean, and our beds were very comfortable with beautiful bed linen. Make sure you pop into the local community store, about a 4 minute drive, and collect all your food staples. It may be small, but it's got everything you need, even sweet ladies to greet you, and have a friendly chat with. Just lovely ❤️

Stayed here from 16th Aug to 22nd Aug 2024 with friends. Lovely location, clean and everything you will need. Nothing to much trouble the owners were there. 20 minutes walk to village pub. Nice & friendly great pub menu & awesome Sunday lunch. Booking is a must. On the edge of the moors, I booked so l could use my 60th birthday treat. Went flying at the local airport on Saturday over the coast. Place is central to other attractions, either 30 minutes to 1 hour. Booked a riding lesson while there. Which is on site. Jenny, the owner, was a lovely instructor & her team was brilliant. Definitely recommend staying here. I will go back as so much to see & do. The only downside was the single bed. I'm used to a king-size bed. 😂

Lovely, homely and clean cottage. The area is beautiful, direct access to the Moor. Janine and Mick (and the rest of their family) are all very welcoming and friendly, to us and our dog who enjoyed every minute of his stay! Will definitely be back. Highly recommend Hallagenna Cottages.
