On The Beach

Photo: Alexei Topor

On The Beach is a substantial family home where everything needed for a group stay comes as standard. Electricity, heating, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi are all included, along with the initial fuel for the open fire. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking from scratch, with a dishwasher and washing machine to handle the practicalities of a large household. A welcome pack arrives with you; travel cots, highchairs and stairgates can be requested in advance.

The ground floor holds two bedrooms, the kitchen, dining room and a generous sitting area that opens onto a patio and enclosed garden with sea views. Upstairs, six more bedrooms spread across the first floor provide flexible sleeping for groups of varying ages and relationships. Two shower rooms plus a separate toilet mean the queue for the bathroom stays manageable. The back garden is secure enough for one dog to stay free, and includes garden furniture and a barbecue for meals outdoors. There's dedicated bike storage if you're planning to explore the area on two wheels, and parking for four cars on site. No smoking indoors. Downderry's beach is sheltered and sandy; a clifftop cafe sits above it, though the descent is steep and the tide covers much of the shore when it's high.

10/10 lovely beach. Very little people even in peak times. Lots of stairs on the way down, no facilities, no shops and no toilets. Bring everything you need.

Lovely large beach - perfect for dog walking! Relatively steep path to get to the beach to consider if any accessibility requirements, though.

Lovely beach, beautiful sand and stunning mountainous backdrop. Access is a bit tricky down a sloping dirt track but it’s a fairly short walk and well worth it. Couldn’t see any facilities and definitely no toilets so worth getting your timings right for this trip!

Beautiful beach. Mostly covered when the tide is in, but still a small section of sand to sit on and enjoy even if it is in. A reasonable walk from the top to the beach and back again - so not suitable for those with mobility issues. Free parking is available on the road side at the top of entry to the beach, but I imagine is very limited at peak times.

Visitors say this beach offers amazing views and good waves for surfing. They also highlight the importance of checking the tides before visiting, as the beach can be covered when the tide is in.
